I think if you played the first place team this year against the first place team from 4 or 5 years ago, and second place v second place and so on all the way down the league, this years crop would win those fixtures comfortably.

It's because of the 100's millions coming in for finishing half way down the league. It just doesn't exist in any leagues.

What we're seeing is an concentration of talent. So we're improving, it's just that the others are too.

This pattern is going to continue apace. There will be a flight to the relative safety of the PL of talent from other leagues

Especially for those who are dead keen on overlooking any improvement outside the league table and shrug their shoulders on the potential of those improvements eventually reflecting on that league table.

Top 10 is a long term goal. My guess is that long term is two different things in TB and GB land.

Why does it need explaining?

I could tell my Mrs that it's my eventual aim for us to take holidays in a luxury resort in the Caribbean, but we'll have to save up by having weekends in Skegness for now. After three or four years of weekends in Skeggy would she not be entitled to ask when it is we're planning on booking that trip to Barbados?

Having a goal without a timescale is utterly, utterly meaningless.

It doesn't need to be Potterball that overcomes this. It could be Potterball mark 2 where for instance we play the long ball more often or something along that ilk, You know win ugly sometimes. I'm not saying use tactics like that too much, but if it counters teams playing like Sheff Utd surely its worth having in our armour.

As we've said before, GP doesn't have that in his locker, or if he does he's too stubborn to use it. . . . . I think he did a little at the end of last season, and we may well see his do it over the next few games.

The time to do it was last Saturday. Then we could have afforded to experiment in safety for the rest of the season.

Its also the Hyppia season. Tony Bloom refused to sack him because he was doing everything right and results would come. In the end Hyppia resigned and the rest is history.

Believe me, there was a lot of complaining back on here back then about how the 20m or so being spent to build the training ground and academy should be being spent on transfers and wages for the first team (even though it'd have broken FFP limits of the day). The extent of some of the short-term thinking was laughable.

And Wigan, Bolton and Birmingham went a long way backwards. It's not easy getting up the league

The clubs who we've gone past in the last 6 or 7 years have been the low hanging fruit relatively speaking. To be top 10 we're trying to get past teams like Palace, Villa, West Ham, Southampton, Wolves, Newcastle. Most of these clubs are more established than us, and pay higher wages than us and have a higher profile, which is likely to convince the Tammy Abrahams of this world that they are a better bet than we are.

We may do it. But we may not. Personally i'm glad the club have a goal of not being 17th all the time and i'm not going to start bashing them over the head because it's not happenning as soon as i'd like it to.

Well, in part yes. He also didn't sack him because he knew he hadn't backed him with players either, hence him binning off the entire recruitment team when Hyypia went. I think Bloom bore some responsibility for the tragic transfer dealings that left us with Shamir Fenelon and Chris O'Grady up front

What I would say is that the 6WCs* aren't nearly so fearsome as they have been. Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool in particular haven't been this poor in some time. Chelsea aren't far behind.

Some of the teams doing really well this season, West Ham & Villa to pick out 2, I really don't think they'd be pushing the places they're pushing in previous years.

We've played some sides giving poor performances this season and not capitalised. I don't think it's down to the league being stronger, we've just made an absolute pigs ear out of picking up points when we've deserved them.

The fans didn't see it that way. They wanted Hyppia gone. They didn't trust Tonys judgment then and Hyppia didn't get his chance to havea better transfer window.

They also happened across Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and N'Golo Kante for less that £2m combined... No-one, literally no-one can legislate for that kind of transfer gamble paying off.

Get Vardy in this side and we'd be pushing for the Champions League

So what I meant was that teams played the teams from their equivalent positions.

So for example, Arsenal are worse than they were 5 years ago, but I bet are still better than the 10th placed team from 5 years ago (whoever that was)

Looking at it from our point of view, the team that got promoted with Bong, Stephens, Kayal etc would get played off the park by the current one. (but I take your point, would probably win 1-0 thanks to a late Duffy header)
