Oh dear, my lad is due to start the night shift at 6.00 there tonight. has also been told he has to cover Xmas day, Boxing day & NYE night shifts because somebody else has gone home (abroad) and 'got stuck'. like they couldn't see that happening.

To be fair old chap - even here in Denmark where people pay 99.9% tax and there are more gritters and salters than dark haired people, most side roads are left untouched. It is down to each household to do it - they have responsibility for the pavement and to the middle of the road outside their house. In most cases it works, people have 25kg bags of salt that they spread and cheap snow shovels. The morning after a heavy snow fall most pavements are clear. the fact that people can sue you if they fall on there arse on ice outside your house may have something to do with it, but all I'm saying is that all the tax and council organisation in the world won't clear a sideroad.....
