€20 each way. Return won't be much cheaper than 2x that and they're all day-returns.

Airport in to town is €2 on a local bus or up to €10 on a private express coach then its about €1.50 for a tram from the city centre to the correct train station (Heuston).

MYOB, tapping into your local(ish) knowledge, do you know how far Newcastle West is from Athlone??

For Ireland, very. Two and a half hour drive or so, and by Limerick City (terrible traffic, terrible road layout).

Athlone's right in the middle of the country so in theory nearly anywhere is only about 4 hours max from it.

.

Although Newcastle west is handy enough to get the ferry from Tarbert across to Clare and on through Ennis.

I have avoided Limerick before by coming down from Athlone through killaloe and down to Nenagh which then brings you south of Limerick on the Dublin road and avoids the city altogether. Newcastle west would then be 35-40 mins from there.
