You could be quite bored, that route is often operated by 22000 series railcars, one number all the way

Apparently the motorway to Athlone is actually due to open next week! Was scheduled for later this year

Compared to the 'motorway till ten mile outside Dublin then crap till Athlone' like 2000, this is a fully seperated m'way all the way.

Just beware theres no services yet so the last petrol station is the Texaco at Lucan in Dublin. 80 miles before Athlone...

just been checking Ryanair website, ryan air are doing 'free' flights out there (tax of £10) whats the accomodation like there and how much is it likley to be

All inter-city services except Belfast and Rosslare have seen them at times, not sure what ones they run all the time, the old loco-hauled units are still common enough and the brand new loco-hauled for Cork.

how much is dublin-athlone by train??

€20 each way. Return won't be much cheaper than 2x that and they're all day-returns.

Airport in to town is €2 on a local bus or up to €10 on a private express coach then its about €1.50 for a tram from the city centre to the correct train station (Heuston).

works out cheaper to hire a car, saw the enterprise sire has a fiesta for £50 for 2 days, will prob do that.
