Yep, a great team playing great football.

Some of us older folk (well, perhaps only me) used to slightly balk at threads like this and the tendency to think that history only began at Hereford. We had a very good team in the late 70s and early 80s including players like Ward, Robinson, Case and Lawrenson (who, just like Cucu was the most expensive defender in the world when we sold him to Liverpool) playing in front of 20 -30,000 (sometimes more and, yes, under Bailey less) and getting to a Cup Final and finishing 13th in the top division.

But the truth is the current crop blow them out of the water. Better players playing more attractive football and with a reasonable shot at Europe. It genuinely is the stuff of dreams.

Exactly my reflection last night. I almost couldn't accept that the squad of 79 to 82, my benchmark for Brighton's best, have been surpassed. Heady times.

Was going to start a similar thread. I don’t really know what to do. We’re SO good. Our entire club is the envy of much of the footballing world.

What a different conversation it is now when someone asks “who do you support?”

“Brighton.” Followed by the strangest feeling of all. SMUGNESS. Not just pride like before. I am smug. I thought our vindication came when we got promoted. When we beat Man United in the premier league for the first time. When Potter took us to new heights. But I think this is it. This week is peak Brighton. Whilst it’s all still new to us and we’ve still got optimism.

It doesn’t get better than this…. Does it?

The really telling thing is that two of our best players, and most coveted by BIG clubs, have come out publicly and said that there are happy here and are in no rush to move on but want to get us into Europe.

That brings a big smile to my face. Who know what the future holds but Albion players not itching to get away when interest from bigger clubs is made public is pretty unique in our history.

While Caceido and Mackie were not likely at any point to be staying beyond summer ‘23 anyway their comments about being happy at the club are sort of de rigueur for any current member of staff or player until they actually leave and therefore should probably be read in the context of a very unlikely January transfer anyway. However, I absolutely agree, that the point about wanting to get us into Europe is amazing - I can’t recall any another players at any other modern time in our history that has voiced so clearly that ambition. We‘ve been toying with the idea of ‘Europe’ since GP had us up in 6/7 place in the autumn of 21/22 but I heard those comments from 2 of our best players, it made me think, ‘sh*t, if our current team (including our best players!) are thinking that, then the proposition of Europe this season is must be very very real - what a reality check!

I don't know how many times I've read that the manager should be sacked or players should be bought/sold because "I don't know where the next goal never mind win is ever going to come from" and then soon enough there is a row of good results or "we've finally turned it around, we've finally learned to do x" and then it turns sour.

Yeah I've heard the "if you're not logically impaired, its because you don't have passion" argument many times before. Maybe the case, maybe it is possible to be both logical and passionate.

I'm not panicking for the last 15 minutes thinking we are going to throw away 3 points with a slender 1-0 lead. I can watch and appreciate the football rather than watching through my fingers when the opposition get yet another corner.

We were all experiencing the fallout from the exit of Potter et al, then the awful news of poor Enock Mwepu and finally me, at Brentford, watching Roberto and the team losing the plot. At the time I thought “that’s it - the slippery slope of disappointment and what might have been”.

How wrong I was. The cathartic experience of dismantling Chelsea proved to be the start of something very special for this Brighton fan. The good things that Potter had instilled into the team were taken to the next level by our Italian maestro. There is a sharpness there now, consistency, a ruthless streak. Now is the time that when we attack, and in numbers, we EXPECT to score. Of course there will be blips along the way, Villa and Charlton for example, but boy this is proving to be one exhilarating ride and I’m loving it.

I agree we can improve further but you mentioned the top 6, so you can't counter with teams below us.

I live in Portland, Maine, a medium sized town in the North-East corner of the U.S. For the Arsenal game I wasn't able to watch in my usual bar, so went to an Irish pub downtown. Inside were five young men in their 20s who had decided that Brighton were their Premier League team, and had fully bought into the experience. They knew all the players, phrases like 'Little Old Brighton', talked about 'us', and were just as passionately watching the game as I was. They were incredibly knowledgeable about the club. Having lived here for nearly 30 years it feels a little strange to no longer be the only Brighton fan in town, to be honest, but it shows how far we've come and how much our style of football is appreciated and enjoyed everywhere.

It's a big turnaround, from not being able to get many of the local kids interested in watching Brighton, to picking up new fans around the globe.

I will not be amazed if we roll Liverpool over and I will not be amazed if Liverpool roll us over. However I will revel in our wins, playing the way we do and no doubt moan about what De Zerbi got wrong when we lose.

I have followed this club too long to ever expect ongoing ups as I am 100% certain the downs will come, probably when we least expect it.

Don’t remember that many times when I’ve enjoyed watching us as much as I do now. Under Mullery as we surged from Div 3 to Div 1, the Cup Final season, even with the relegation, We’re f***ing brilliant under Poyet, The spirit, flair and character of the CH team as we came back from a gutting failure to get to the PL, the change of style under GP were all up there though.

I somehow remember a lot on here stating that we never beat Championship or PL sides destined for the drop. Well we have, so I reckon that’s a bit of an improvement, don’t you?

Can’t be arsed to go through our results over the last twelve months against top 12 - the info. is out there somewhere.

Both Potter and De Zerbi have shown us what a real intelligent and tactical manager is. So many are either just coaches or one trick ponies. Even the premier League is filled with one plan men - Conte, Rogers, Vieira, Moyes etc.
