Was there really no alternative to handing it all over to a gambler?

I've never met a successful businessman that isn't a gambler - and I've met lots. The issue is whether Tony knows the difference between a blind punt and a calculated gamble.

Pots of cash, being a massive fan and having a brillant business CV does not guarantee success in football - Mike Ashley's spunked £250m on Newcastle and it's still a shambles.

What will give us a good chance is passion aligned to a clear vision and a plan that sticks to a budget.

Tony can hopefully rely on his family as well to advise him where mistakes were made in the past. If we can have the best bits of Mike Bamber and Dick Knight then we'll probably have the Bolly out in a few years toasting the Premiershit.

I know, the credit crunch is called that for a reason. But that doesn't mean that money can't be borrowed at the moment, but merely that it takes more time and effort to do so. Everyone seems to be assuming that it was literally impossible to borrow the money for Falmer but at least one person I've spoken to whose views I respect suggested that it was possible but tougher.

If so, it seems a big risk to me. I can't pretend to be particularly delighted about all this this morning.

I'm in two minds also. Seems to me there's no earthly way the loans will be able to be repaid in 2023, unless we are planning on becoming the most successful football club on the planet by about 2013, and remaining that way for a decade. If that doesn't happen, property developer Mr Bloom might just have got himself a prime piece of real estate at a very reasonable price.

Hoping for the best, obviously, but deeply suspicious that nobody is THAT much of a fan ???

Well, why don't you just piss off and support Palarse - you cannot be a real fan thinking like that - but Tony Bloom obviously is.

f*** you. Think ahead to 2023 when the mega-million loans become repayable. The boy's a property developer FFS. For sure, it'll be a grand ride til 2023 and I'm happy as the next fan. But what happens then? Toy's R Us megastore? Super-luxury hotel couple of miles from Glyndebourne? The possibilities are endless. Planning rules can change in that time. Like I say, nobody's THAT much of a fan. Bloom will have his own long term game plan for the Falmer site. Which may or may not involve the Albion.

It's a no interest free loan of £80-93 million quid, have you worked out the guy/girl who started this thread what borrowing that amount of money off the bank would account to over a period of time, yet we got offered by Bloom this money for no money back on what giving us, also for him to take charge as Chairman and also stated will be giving money to spend but will not go into how much.
I gotta say im pleased someone like you isnt running the club that would prefer to borrow this amount of money and be charged interest on this of which we could spend that on buying players, wages for club or building a squad that is also worthy of playing at Falmer.
Than to be given the money and say just give it back to me in 2024 if have that amount then, yes he is a gambler but also a property owner who has land in Australia, and other countrys, also was involved with bookies who never lose and also a professional poker player.
He has also stated he isnt in this as a business but as a love of the club and has history with the club via family ties.
Unbelieveable that have people still moaning at what happens when even get this good news and doesnt have any possible downsides, just someone who seems to care for club like we do and has money to help.

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
The Blooms have been subsidising the club for a good few years, despite what is written here. They are decent people who will see us through the next phase of expansion with Falmer and beyond. They are Brighton people who realise that we are a club with massive potential that have sold ourselves short for too long.

Some of the CRAP written by NSC'ers who should really know better is actually bordering on libelous. If they got their snouts out of todays Guardian for one moment, or out of their own arseholes into the REALITY of 21st Century provincial football team management, they would realise how pathetic they actually sound.

The thing is without Bloom funding Falmer and covering our losses at Withdean there's a very good chance that the club would go out of extstance long before 2023, , At least we know we've got a club to support until then which is more than a lot of fans can say at the moment.

Totally agree. And its all good, up to 2023. As you say, its more than a lot of fans can say at the moment, and I guess we should be grateful really. What happens beyond 2023 though, is anybody's guess, other than its fairly safe to say already that we won't be in a position to pay the loans back.

Why do you think it will not be possible to pay the loans back?

It seems to me that Tony Bloom is simply doing what the club were hoping the banks would have done...and what MOH still says might have been possible i.e. lend us the dosh for the stadium which will eventually be paid back. If we were able to pay the banks back why not Bloom?

I have no doubt that when the moment is right TB will take his money and interest.

Bloom is taking a very long term gamble. At the moment, the investment he is putting in is worth way more than the club itself. It is a huge personal risk. He knows that if he can invest, build the stadium and get us to the prem, he will reach the promised land in terms of money. The club will then be worth significantly more than his initital investment and he may be able to sell at a decent profit.

At the end of the day, he is a fan as well as a businessman and I feel totally comfortable with Tony Bloom. I am also very excited that we are about to embark on the most exciting period in Albion's history. Lets enjoy it.

All this talk of borrowing from the banks is pie in the sky. We could never have borrowed 93 million and if you honestly think that was ever on the cards then you are mad. Even allowing for Bloom`s input it would not have been possible and Knight proved to me what I had said all along that ,yes he came in at the right time and got us back to Brighton but he could not delver because he is potless and when everyone clamours to give him his OBE just tell him he can have it in 12 years time if we can borrow the money to have it made.
