[Albion] Was the Referee’s performance v Roma the best we have seen at The Amex?

Sorry why was it a 'perfectly good goal'? It was a high boot and dangerous, anywhere else on the pitch that's a free kick, just because it's a goal doesn't change that.
Unless you are Doku - when you can stick your boot into MacA's chest.

Disagree. Van Hecke stopped low to head it... IMO their forward had every right to use his foot.
He may have a right to 'use his foot' but the law is clear; he doesn't have a right to do a scissor kick or bicycle kick when there is risk to an opponent (without any cavaet in the law about height etc). If he'd been facing the goal, had one foot on the ground and just lifted the other foot up maybe it would be a different conversation

Nowhere close.

Outside of his control, I thought last night was a great example of why the Premier League's additional time for time-wasting is so much more effective at stopping that rubbish than running around booking players.

I thought he was excellent throughout. Dealt with time-wasting very early on - I can't remember ever seeing a premier league ref booking the goalkeeper in the first half?
And completely let him get away with worst in the second half, thought he was a very poor ref and lost control and let them get away with murder. Only 5 mins extra time when there was 5 substitution so that's 2.5 minutes, so only another 2.5 mins for their time wasting and injuries? Nope bloody awful ref.

It's funny how people watching the same game see very different things. I thought he refereed the game very well and, much against my pre-match expectations, gave us every chance to get something from it.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think the standard in the Europa has been really high (bar the first game). A real upgrade in quality from the PL. I thought last night he made lots of inconsistent mistakes and as others have mentioned, he lost control of the game at at least one point - utterly bizarre decision to book De Rossi (correctly) and then book RDZ later, but not send De Rossi off for the same incident. To be critical as well, his positioning wasn't great - at that level you really shouldn't be so poorly positioned you get in the way of a counter (for Roma) that stops the game. But overall, he was fine.

My comment was more about how sharing out the bookings doesn't tackle time-wasting effectively, and how adding lots of injury time has done more.

Compared to some of the stuff we get served up in the PL I thought he did ok..perhaps wasn’t quite as ‘strict’ the second half

The best? No..but then generally you feel the best are the games where you don’t notice the ref …hence u can’t remember them

Just felt he was wrong to stop play everytime Roma player went down. Needed to let them know he was aware what they were up to and played on

It's alright waving a bunch of yellow cards around but you could tell he was never going to send anyone off. Sure at one point in the second half he started to reach for his pocket and then stopped.

Correct decision on Roma goal. Lost controll of the time waisting for sure. Roma's keeper should of had another yellow for more time waisting. Thought Roma should of had a few more yellows, after giving some out for less. 7 min of time waisting first half, 2nd have should have been minimum of 10 min.
However saying that so much better than PL refs.

Yep. they had a free kick just outside their box, late in the second half. The no.5 (Ndicka) stood over it for about ten seconds as if he was going to take it, then stepped over it and left it to the keeper. the referee definitely did reach for his pocket - then presumably remembered that the player was on a yellow, and instead just signalled for them to hurry it up!

Possibly the best for us. Ruling out a perfectly good goal in the first half for them. He did seemed to set his stall against their dark arts but there was only so far he could go.

General decision making seemed good both ways. Lamptey's card was a bit harsh mind.

The Arsenal v Porto ref in the ECL was a different gravy this week. Came in a Tardis from the 70s.
Pretty much agree with all of this, and it's almost as if you've taken it on yourself to assess officiating
The way I'd put it is:
-- he was good at clamping down on time-wasting in the first half: tick
-- why he disallowed their goal is beyond me, and I'd have been fuming if the boot was on the other foot: cross (or tick if, as with the majority of football fans, you view this as a positive)
-- thought he took his eye off the ball with their time-wasting in the second half: cross

Thought he was great, better by some distance than his PL counterparts
Absolutely this. This is about as good as you can get. Didn't stand any nonsense, booked their keeper for timewasting really quickly and nipped it in the bud. 10 times better than any prem ref I've seen this year. Our refs seem frightened of upsetting anyone, which means you get timewasting like Villa's 15 head injuries and goalkeeper fannying about wasting time. I'd rather we had strong refs and upset the whinge brigade than add on 10 minutes in each half.

He was a complete homer. We got every decision going in the first half. I'd go so far as to say he was the most biased ref towards us that I've ever seen.
Not sure about that. I don’t think “Dirty” Lamptey fouled a Roma player when he was booked and the ref ignored a blatant late challenge on VH. I do think we were fortunate though to have their goal disallowed for high kicking.

He did a lot well and some he could have done better but it's a hard job when half the players on the pitch are doing their best to press the limit on the rules. One does also have to remember that the guidance for the UEFA competitions is different from the PL.

I'm confused by attitudes to the goal being disallowed. The law is designed exactly to stop throwing your foot around blindly at head height. He didn't check whether there was a player behind him and endangered a player. Exactly like Bissouma's one back in the day (Newcastle?).
