What makes a penalty stonewall? Where did this phrase come from. Appeared a few years back and seems to mean absolutely nothing.

It is a penalty but it is a ridiculous punishment for what happened. Not sure what the answer is but I don't think penalties are fit for purpose when a handball on the line results in the same outcome (obviously minus the red) as pushing someone on the edge of the box when they are heading towards the corner flag. Twas ever thus though.

This is nonsense, I’m afraid. If some 6 foot muscle bound brick shit house shoulder barges you full in the back when you are looking the other way, you would fall over! I always judge these things on what would probably happen anywhere else on the pitch and if that barge was outside of the box I think it would have been waved away, as the ref did initially. Also he wasn't denied a clear goal scoring opportunity, he was going away from goal on his way out of the box.

1) I feel it would have been a foul elsewhere on the pitch, unless the ball feel to an Everton player and ref decides to play advantage. It’s a clear barge, and a clear playing of the man not the ball. Them’s the rules*.
2) I’m not sure what being denied a clear goal scoring chance has to do with it; that relates to whether there’s a red card also included.

The speed the players run at these days, a hell of a lot more momentum which just the smallest knock can send a person tumbling. look at the speed in the eighties or nineties, nowhere near as fast paced or as physically fit.

I can see how the ref missed it in real time but once you go to the replay it's clear. It's actually an example of VAR working well. Luckily for us it worked out as DCL ballooned it off and over the bar.

Definite penalty. Some BHA tinted glasses being worn by anyone that thinks it’s ok to barge an opponent over. The bigger question is what on earth was Mwepu doing ?

Stupid challenge and a pen because of it. However, so was Connolly's when he was clattered by Maguire. However with the officials these days, even the prats watching the videos, who knows. Rudiger flying through the air at Lamptey, Kane attempting to break Robertson's leg and Mane leading with the elbow, who knows what decisions will be made.

There is certainly an argument for a new level of punishment which is awarding a goal plus something further (a penalty, a free kick from the edge of the box and/or a card). Should only be used for professional fouls that stop a goal (blatant handball, fouling goalie, violent conduct, etc). That gives a degree of difference in consequences between the scenarios you mention
