Considering the league structure where Inigio came from in Spain I expect that his move to Brighton resulted in a considerable increase in wages. I've been to several Segunda B games in Spain this year (Alicante, Sporting Mahones, Barca "B" and Alcoyano) and have to admit the crowds in this league aren't that big to support many professional players, let alone ones who are allegedly on £5k a week.

The league standard is interesting down there, a lot of Calderon style flair, with not much hoof-ball, but the end finishing isn't up to scratch.

Voted for no cap as I don't believe clubs should be told how much they can pay their players, however I would temper by saying that common sense should prevail, no team should live beyond its means and pay ridiculous wages...though it is clear that some have been.

£15K a week sounds a lot even for the Championship.

£15k a week is quite a good pay for the Premiership.

this is pure bollocks. i doubt he was even offered £5k.

Why did we withdraw the offer? Just leave it on the table in case he doesn't agree terms. He is the sort of player that will give 100% whomever he plays for.

Another managerial mistake!!!!

Poyet has an 18 month contract but you can bet your bottom dollar that if a top Championship club or premiership club offer him considerably more than we can, he would jump ship.

dont read too much in to the offer being withdrawn, it might just be the language used. maybe its standard practice.

Whats annoying is the fact that Southampton FC at the start of this season had a Save Our Saints campaign and thought that they were stuffed.A couple of weeks later they were splashing out £1m on Lambert.
Because they were bought by a Swiss billionaire.

I find this whole episode disgraceful. Calderon wants a reality check. I had a lovely nap & woke up to find this shit! I've got the right f***ing hump!

No it isn't.

really? how much do unknown foreign rightbacks usually earn then? last time i read about it, a while ago i'll admit, average wages were about that or a bit lower. not everyone gets 50k, 100k deals.

How about

Main squad limited to 30 max
Youth squad set at 30 max

Spending on wages set at a % of the total revenue from :
Season ticket sales
+
advertising
+
legit advertising (not £10m for a single billboard just to up the pot)
+
% of TV revenue.

Also youth and development spending must be 20% or greater of overall wage bill (that stops clubs removing the youth & development schemes to finance the main squad).

That way the wage structure would be capped on an overall squad basis.

My belief is that the Pompeyscum, Hull, Palarsee scenario whereby the wages were so large they have bankrupt the clubs is so wrong that it needs to be legislation to bring it back in check.

15k a week is ridiculous for this level, Burnley's highest paid player is on about that. I'm sure even Southampton wouldn't offer that to any player whilst still in this league, especially for a player whos only been here half a season, has not really played at a higher level and isn't that great tbh.

I like the idea of guaranteed youth and development spending however doubt the FA will ever get off their arses and actually do something about it.

A home match with a 7000 gate at £20 per ticket brings in £140k, and there is not one every week. There is also revenue from TV, prize money, advertising programs and replica shirts etc. Apart from players we also pay a Managing Director, a Chief Executive, a secretary, a manager, an assistant manager and a director of football, just to name some of the higher earners. I don't see how the club could possibly pay a first team squad anything like £10k per week each because it would exhaust all the gate receipts and more. Surely an average of £1k per week is more realistic.
