More than likely there is collusion within the Executives of VW and this went on for quite a while, the biggest issue is when you do this you cannot back down and so it goes on and on until a catastrophe is inevitable.

There will be quite a few people leaving VW over this, how they leave and the probable huge conga they will get to leave is another thing entirely.

ultimately, i blame the politicans and global warming lobby. they've obsessed over CO2 for so long at the expense of other pollution. policy has been to promote diesel, now there's concern over local emissions of particles and NOx. now we'll have a knee jerk the otherway no doubt banning something, which will have a further detremental effect somewhere.

lesson to learn - get back to petrol and stop taxing us on a tiny % of global CO2.

When we bought our latest golf we initially wanted a diesel but when discussing our usage patten with the salespeople it transpired that a diesel was no good to use due to the diesel partial filter they us in them, we don't do enough long runs ie min 20 mile run once a week to clean it, If you don't do this it can damage it and costs £1000 to replace so we had to go petrol which wasn't a disappointment as it gave an extra 40 BHP.

If your car is mainly for short journeys and running around town, then a diesel would probably not be suitable anyway.
Possible DPF problems etc.

If the Americans blow up a wedding party in Afghanistan by mistake or kill and maim thousands with a chemical leak in India it seems to be bad luck... But, fiddle your mileage figures for already gas guzzling yanks and you will be taken apart financially... It's a strange world.

This affects 11 m VW cars - only 500k of which are in the US.

The big problem is going to be Europe, the actual emissions which have polluted and the mpg numbers which have been distorted. This is all about deceit, not incompetence.

This is very different from the BP sue the crap of them situation.

If this spreads (well, spreaded, it'll have been done some time ago if it was) to other car makers, expect a huge backlash against diesels - motor tax and fuel excise on diesel could easily be ramped heavily. The current system of tax/sales tax if applicable on cars being based on carbon emissions only was kept on the assumption that the Euro V/VI rules would ensure that the pretty nasty nitrous and particulate emissions on diesels went down, but if they haven't there'll be hell to pay.
