The problem we have is the Tories couldn't help use the opportunity to abuse their power, ie declare one ID type is good for the oldies but not for the young, also deliberately exclude legitimate forms of ID used by young people.

Anyway, all being well they'll be binned soon. Then Labour can amend the law

Johnson, rather than being too stupid / organised to 'remember' to bring his ID, more likely just assumed that the rules didn't actually apply to the likes of him - much like everything else.

Painful conversation in front of me at the polling station between the person supposedly assisting people and an older gentleman trying to vote:

''Have you got your voters ID?''

''eerrr no, i haven't got that, do you mean my polling card''

''No, no your voters ID'

''Err, no, shall I go home and get it''

''Like a driving licence, yes I should have''

Nearly stepped in. Why would someone call its Voters ID? The lack of awareness was something to behold.

"Relatively narrow list of permitted documents" - oh come on! This is Grauniad [sic] levels of bad research/reporting. The list is quite expansive. From the Government website:

"You’ll need one of the following types of photo ID to vote:

• a UK or Northern Ireland photocard driving licence (full or provisional)
• a driving licence issued by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Isle of Man or any of the Channel Islands
• a UK passport
• a passport issued by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or a Commonwealth country
• a PASS card (National Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
• a Blue Badge
• a biometric residence permit (BRP)
• a Defence Identity Card (MOD form 90)
• a national identity card issued by the EU, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
• a Northern Ireland Electoral Identity Card
• a Voter Authority Certificate
• an Anonymous Elector’s Document

You can also use one of the following travel passes as photo ID when you vote:

• an older person’s bus pass

once they've been in for a while, they'll be convinced it's much better to give everyone a National ID than repeal voter ID. give it ~9mth before its floated as a general benefit for all manner of things.

After the previous general election I'm happy to show ID to vote. Last time out someone had got my name and address from the electoral role and voted 'as me' beofre I got down to vote later in the day. Spent nearly an hour trying to prove that hadn't been me, and was eventually allowed to vote with my electoral card and full ID which I had on me. Must say I didn't think this sort of thing happened much but apparently in my ward it used to happen approximately 50 times at each vote! Who knew?
