its funny, the objections against having a vote are from the pro-europeans. one of the main objections to the EU is the lack of proper democracy and accountability. why do those in favor of EU fear democractic input so much?

Actually it has 26 agreements not dozens and a vast majority of them are with non-EU countries. Nice to see pro-EU falsehoods getting out there already !

26 is 'dozens.'

I've noticed that - it would also appear that anyone who thinks leaving the EU is a good idea is a moron !

This.

If anyone thinks for a second that Dave will lead us out of the EU needs their bumps felt.

This is playing politics within the conservative party and has nothing to do with a proper choice.

He also wants to take out Farage and his merry men. I'll say it slowly..it's...a...fudge.

Bang on, it is a very clever political move by Cameron.

The referendum call should stop any political in fighting within the Tories (and the coalition partners) between now and the next election as it kicks the whole can down the road until after it. The Tories are also losing voters to UKIP, why should Tory (or any) voters go to the one issue UKIP party now? I think even UKIP only offer what the Tories offer now iro Europe....a referendum on being part of the EU? All TV/radio commentators will be saying this to Farage et al from now on too.

It also may not (and probably won't) happen as the Tories need to have an overall majority for it to do so, plus there seem to be other caveats, which may not be the case come the next parliament. It's a bit like Blair/Brown 5 tests to join the Euro fudge, which was never really going to happen....(thank goodness).

Well, yes, two of them but the implication in the original post was that there are far more than a couple of dozen and that all were with EU countries. Meanwhile, in the land of reality there's around three with the EU ( can't get the exact details at the moment ) as collective negotiation and agreement is used between Switzerland and the EU for ALL EU members. Hence why in 2004 trade agreements with Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary etc were cancelled when they become members of the EU.

I pay national insurance in the UK, and pay tax on UK earnings..... I have every right....I am also living in the EU, the same as you.

I would play another record regarding UKIP but sadly, there isnt one.

no, no, any one who thinks it needs to be discussed or debated is a moron. apparently theres absolutly no sensible or rational reason to want to review it in anyway and the only possible options are 1) we stay in to what ever conclusion the Franco-German leadership decide 2) you must leave completly which will end civilisation as we know it in this country. (even though that Franco-German alliance isnt so sure anymore where to go, or if its gone too far. the people of europe certainly arent convinced, but never asked).

The Swiss have dozens of separate individual free trade agreements to make this work. It would take decades for the UK to negotiate similar arrangements.

Bullshit , all the hard work has been done on negotiations over the last 40 years. Switzerland was a founding member of EFTA in 1960. They are also a member of the EEA which has a bilateral trading agreement with the EU. We would only need to join EFTA and EEA to trade on an equal basis plus the ability to make our own trade agreements.

A bin fest. Whoddathunkit?

It's an early electioneering gambit he won't follow through with.

What he will do is try and move us out of some of the social obligations of being in Europe, ensuring that workers in the UK have less rights than their counterparts and that our factories remain easier and cheaper to shut down than those abroad as multi nationals cut their cloth to recession.
Also the idea we need to cut harder and faster seems like rot. The Irish are currently doing the same as us only a year or two further down the line, providing us with a consistently ignored barometer of how well the cuts programme will work.

This is exactly right. I certainly don't want the great british public voting, there's peole like Bushy, this Redhill chap and Das Reich out there, christ most people shouldn't be trusted to choose between tea or coffee let alone the future of the UK.

There is this idea that Britain is too big and important to have to listen to other people but frankly this just isn't true. Despite our incredible history and cultural significance we just aren't THAT powerful and important a nation anymore. We don't have the sound economic footing to fall back on and leaving the EU would be a disaster. There's also the very real possibility that such a referendum spurs on little Englanders who believe leaving the EU means kicking out all the Poles and Bulgarians etc. which then becomes an ugly racial mess.

I don't believe such a referendum will actually go ahead for the reason that most sensible people know it would be an absolute disaster for the UK if we were to leave the EU and unfortunately the general public are largely morons so a vote could see us opt out and sink like a big brown stone.

So what does this disaster involve then ?

If there ever is a referendum in 2017 by that time the EU could have grown to 32 member states. There will be a two tier status system , those adopting the Euro and those choosing to keep their own national currency.

Of course Ukip are bigoted and racist and homphobic. Anyone that votes for them for any other reason than to weaken the Conservatives is also very likely to be racist, bigoted and homophobic. This is the party that threw out one of their members because he publically spoke up for gay marriage.
