Off to Las Vegas in November to celebrate my 40th (I know I don't look it ) and wanted to ask the Community that is NSC where to stay and what the best things are around there in the desert.

Thanks for you valued input as it will be better than the guide books

It can be a thrilling place, but also a very depressing place where so many peoples dreams are shattered.

There's some big rock formation within easy reach of Vegas, don't know what it's called, but it's like...a canyon, or something? It's quite grand, apparently.

I heard it was worth seeing.

Gambling, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon and of course getting married (could be a bit extreme). Also one of the shows

If you have a car, then Calico towards LA is quite good. Similarly a long drive to Page (overnight stop required) means that you can take a ride down the Colorado River.

If you are going you should really go on that roller coaster on top of the hotel, it would be rude not to.

Loved the place, stayed in the MGM Grand, takes about 20 minutes to get from your room to the outside it is so big.

I'm not sure about the comparison to Blackpool! Here are a couple of links to the main mountain and desert hiking areas just outside of town, which are all worth a visit.

You should be able to find some really good hotel rates on The Strip as the economy sucks here right now. Bellagio, Wynn, Encore, The Venetian, Palazzo, Caesars Palace, MGM, Mandalay Bay are some of the top hotels in town but will be relatively expensive. New York New York, Monte Carlo, Luxor, Paris, Planet Hollywood are some decent mid priced hotels, but stay away from dumps like The Sahara, Stratosphere (although definately go to the top for sightseeing) Tropicana, The Flamingo, Imperial Palace, Riviera, Circus Circus.

Take a trip downtown to Fremont Street to see the seedier side of Las Vegas.

Loads of good shows, restaurants, bars, live music etc. although anything on The Strip is overpriced.

The Crown & Anchor is the only English Style Pub in town and you can watch the football there if you must (they only admitted that they were from Hull when they made it to the premiership!).

....and bring a jacket, it starts to get a little cool in November.

I feel exactly the same as Psychobilly, that's exactly the term I use to describe it to people. However, some pointers:

DON'T stay at the Excalibur.

Check out the Bellagio and the Wynn, even if you're not staying there. Very nice. Also, probably the best buffets are at these two.

Under no circumstances miss the Grand Canyon, it's awesome in the original and truest sense of the word. The Hoover dam is OK, but the bridge they're building above it to take the traffic off it is much more impressive, if you ask me.

Don't miss the rides at the top of the Stratosphere - I did all three and they're proper scary, really good stuff.

Finally, forgive me if you know all this already - if you're gambling, even on one of the cheapest fruit machines, the drinks are basically free. A tip to the waitress is all that's needed, and ensures they keep coming. Drinking at the bars without gambling however, and the prices are like buying a drink at a 'fashionable' club off the King's Road.

The Riviera was ok, for us last year. We were on a budget but it's pretty handy as it's in the middle between The Strip & Downtown and The Deuce ($5 all day bus) is right outside. As is Slots o'Fun.

I was really surprised and somewhat disapointed that the slots no longer pay out cash. It takes away so much of the noise and atomsphere, hence us enjoying ending most evenings in Slots, a right poor mans flea pit!.

Old Central Station Casino, Downtown, has it's own micro-brewery, and Vanilla Vodka, to say we were smashed after a few hours there was an understatement.

The Mandalay Bay is nice - Death Valley is awe inspiring.

Ballys in the middle of the strip (next to Paris) is good for a budget
The whole place is superb and outside the Planet Holly wood hotel is a bar right on the strip with half naked gorgeous girls sitting in hot tubs and dancing on stages and the drinks prices are pretty good.

Vegas is great, ben there four times now and stayed at the mirage, paris, excalibur and imperial palace.

the best hotel was most def excalibur (make sure you stay in the refurbed rooms Tower II) - it had the best atmosphere of the lot and was very friendly and easy going!

Hard Rock is worth checking out - fit ladies everywhere and while it is a casino - its much more like a bar / nightclub with the 360 degree bar right in the centre of all the tables !

Rio hotel is off the strip but go there before sunset to watch the sun go down and the lights come on over the strip.

Go inside the main doors, turn right go up one escalator (maybe 2) and ask for Voodoo Lounge, It is free entry before a certain time (10pm I think) as it is a bar/ night club.

Men must wear a collar but jeans are OK not to sure about shorts..

The sight from the top is one of Vegas best kept secrets..

The buffet is also good and cheaper than the strip, right outside is an Outback Steakhouse if you are not bored of steak.

Grand Canyon must be done by helicopter as it is about 6- 8 hours drive, Long straight boring roads,

Stratosphere has a roller coaster that goes around the outside of the tower and also one of those shooty up things at the very top.

A visit to ELVIS A RAMA museum is a must, CAnt remember the location but off the strip.

Thread reopened............There is a Hooters on Manila bay.....worst and most expensive food around, but I guess if you have to get your kick looking at women in tight shorts, off you go......its actualy more fun with a real girl who dont think she is a model and not a waitress..
