By the sounds of it, i think he'll only be in the dev squad for a short time to understand the philosophy Gus has brought in. Once he's up to speed with how we play he'll be pushing for a place.

All sounds good.

Another one to go in the Bermuda Triangle that is the development squad!!!!!! Any danger of actually seeing any of these players near the first team!!!! This Latvian is wanted by loads of clubs and we've put him in the development squad???? He's 22 not 16, if he isn't good enough to go in the first team then why the hell are we buying him??!!

This is a very good point..... and those that attend the press conferences should be asking pointed and searching questions about this type of issue, not dull questions about pre match prep etc.

You may have a point if we had signed him from Barcelona, Swansea etc
He needs time to adapt to our way of playing, so a period playing games in the development squad is the way.
One for the future hopefully.

Some of you seem to think a develoment squad is something that can produce over night. Why did we sign him if he is not good enough for the first team? Dear oh dear. The new training academy will take a good few years before it starts producing. It is a long term plan. We had a lot over young players coming though in the latter part of the Goldstone years but quite frankly that was because we were shocking and skint.

Maksimenko are players the next step up for the Dev Squad in terms of quality and as Poyet stated it is a plan to bridge the gap between them and the 1st team. In a few years the quality of the Dev squad will be much better than it is now. Brighton are not going to be the boom and bust club like others. Hence the larger proportion of investment is in the Academy rather throwing huge money at instant success is the plan. It will provide stability and quality long term.

One for the future????? Like all the others in the development squad that have never appeared!! I.e agdestein, surely he must be ready by now??

In 1975 we signed a promising player.
Initially he played in the reserves not making his debut until 27 March 1976 against Hereford United.
Peter Ward was his name.

I think we'll first see him in April if our playoff hopes are over, give the lad a start to see what he's made of for next season.

Albion Sign Vitalijs Maksimenko

Albion have signed Latvian defender Vitalijs Maksimenko on a two-and-a-half year contract, which will run until the summer of 2015...

The 22-year-old joined from Latvian League side Skonto Riga and will initially join up with the club’s development squad.

Albion boss Gus Poyet told seagulls.co.uk, “He is a player we have been aware of for a while and we feel he has got the potential to bring more quality to our first-team in the future.

“He is a young defender who has quality on the ball. He will train with the development squad group under the guidance of Luke Williams to learn about the way we play here, then it’s up to him to earn his place in the first team.”

Maksimenko has already featured for Albion’s development squad side in a friendly against Barnet while on trial at the end of November and he is delighted to make the move to Brighton.

He added, “I am so happy to come to Brighton and to join this Championship team. The atmosphere at the club, the pitches and the stadium itself are all fantastic.

“I enjoyed the trial and waited for around four weeks to hear from the club, but when I did hear the good news I was so happy. They play good football here and don’t play the ball long so often, which suits me.

“When I was young I was always looking out for Latvian players in the Premier League and now I keep a close eye on Kaspars Gorkss at Reading because he’s the best defender in Latvia.

“I watched the game against Bristol City earlier this season and the stadium is amazing. I was watching the players, coaches, the fans and it’s all amazing. I am very excited at the challenge ahead.”
