So Villa put out something Brighton boss Graham Potter, on whether he could have fielded a more experienced side: "Not really, not with the situation we've got - a couple of injuries, a couple of lads sick as well.

"So we're just going through that little phase at the moment.

"In the last round we were able to do a bit more experience and it would have been preferable to have a couple more around but it wasn't to be at this stage.

"A couple were close but it just wasn't worth the risk really.

pretty close to their first team and won against us. They then put out their first team

they made NINE changes. If you call making nine changes close to their first team then fair enough.

Potter’s justification

Your support was spot on. I have to say that Liverpool support gets it, and without the smuggery and arrogance of fans of other clubs we can all mention.

Honorable mention for the Stains support who sang and sang when Leicester defenestrated them recently.

Leeds and Newcastle supporters are also good away from home, even in adversity. (Blasphemous round these parts to praise Leeds in any form .... tin hat on).

1969-1974 my team. I can name the first 13 without puse for breath. My bad? No. That football* was 20 years ahead of its time. And nobody called a div 3 side their team when they were 11.

*Minus the GBH obvs :lolol:

Potter is a huge fan of the FA Cup but like any other sensible the manager the last 20 years he seems to consider the League Cup a nuisance. If people are that desperate for a trophy, maybe Brighton should arrange a friendly cup in the summer and invite some Championship clubs. Same level of glory.

I think Christie-Davies who played for Liverpool tonight is a local lad - went to Dorothy Stringer School.

Tell that to Swindon. They have a trophy. We don't.

Otherwise, er, yeah, you're right :xmas:

They were all senior players though, they played Grealish, McGinn etc, they have a 25 man squad, as do we

This has been talked about though

I'm making a more general point though about our approach to cup competitions over the last few years and what I see as a lack of intensity in these games and too great a risk aversion to playing our first team players. In the Premier league even with a cup run, we're still playing way fewer games than we were in the Championship with a larger squad

How do you work that out? We would have needed to beat Villa, Wolves and Liverpool to get there. Besides, has any Premier League club put a full strength team out in the Carabao Cup?
If we'd put out a stronger team against Villa, of course we'd have stood a better chance of progressing. It ain't rocket science!

Would you have preferred it if potter had gone all out in the Carabao, then played the kids at the Bridge?
Might as well have done, for all the points we got.

This fixture was being discussed on Talksport this afternoon - discussing the idea of Liverpool having to play the youngsters against Villa as if it was a new phenomenon, so hats off to the one pundit on there who jumped in to point out that Villa were only there because they'd played against a mix of U18s and U21s at Brighton.
The most annoying thing about that night was Villa fans glorifying their magnificent away triumph, blithely unaware (or too thick to realise) that they had only just managed to beat our kids!

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
The things is, we have had a long succession of managers who have treated the cup competitions with contempt. Not having a pop, i've liked most of them, but it's undeniable. I think Wilkins was probably the last not to make significant changes for every cup tie.

The effect of this is that as fans we're forgetting it is possible to put full or nearly full teams out and more importantly, play the fixture more like you would in a league game rather than a pre-season friendly.

We've prioritised league points for a decade, I get the reasons why, but now silverware isn't out of the question, I think we should be aiming higher. I'd like to see us win something.

How much higher than getting to Wembley do you want to get? Ok it was a semi final, but we played the eventual winners.

And no doubt tonight as we'll, scummy Villans airbrushing this cup run into someone magnificent. Looking forward to one of the Manc clubs sending them out and back to their gutter.

On Villa chatline: "Sky scouse wankfest only talking about how shit Villa were - to be 4-0 up. What this club needs is a major tragedy with resultant decades of court cases"

Sick...............................

So Villa are one match from Wembley having beaten Crewe, our reserves, Wolves reserves and Liverpool Under 18s. The competition is now a complete joke.

Other sports innovate and evolve but the FA do nothing. The success of the Premier League is papering over the cracks - domestic football needs a big shake-up.

Erm, didn’t we get to the semi final of the FA Cup last year?

The rest of our senior squad (Balogun, , Bernado etc were injured for Villa. We just didn’t have a side to put out

Said it before, and I'll say it again, and easy way forward is to exclude clubs qualifying for the Champions League to start with. Allow it to be a 'best of the rest' cup. They don't need the extra games in their schedules.

So true and so sad. I know I've banged on in the past (and will in the future) about trying to actually win a trophy, but the League Cup is now so second-rate that even I don't think we should field full-strength sides in the early rounds. (I think Potter went too far against Villa but we've done that debate to death).

Sad as I say because the League Cup games against Ipswich, Derby and away at Forest are three of my stand-out moments following the Albion. Most league games, especially from over forty years ago, are just a blur (if I can remember any details at all), but those Cup games I'll never forget.

This competition is dead, things need to change
