Laughable logic. No one plays their strongest side - not Villa, Wolves, Liverpool...

City have been putting out very strong sides in recent years. It's quite possible to do so. And if we had, we'd very likely have made the semis.

But we chose not to. Ah well

Well it’s 4-0 now, Liverpool children playing very nice technical football (better than villa) but very naive in some positioning and passing, and easily muscled off ball

Will always be the way, men beat kids. We saw that when Dean Smith unilaterally took the league cup serious at the Amex.

Still the easiest cup to win for a club the size of Brighton and the relatively positioned Aston Villa. I know it's hopelessly old fashioned to want to win something for our club - but I'd be grateful for the memory of a League Cup win at Wembley whoever we played along the way. And the chance to see the Albion in Europe properly for the first time ever. Still an ambition for me a a fan (sorry customer). Villa might even win it if the opposition they continue to face aren't able to field anything but kids. SF could be City, Man U, Leicester and Villa so they'd still be outsiders I guess.

It one person has mentioned WHY Liverpool have HAD to play a team like that though...?!

FIFA/UEFA sent them to play the World Club Cup, which has been running for the best part of 50 years. A squad’s required. South American and European clubs take it seriously.

Leaving the kids as the only option.

ManC always take it seriously, so Brighton wouldn’t stand a chance at SF or Final stage.

The 2019 final comprised these line ups, that outclass Brighton every time they face us.

Because we had injuries, suspensions and Chelsea on the Saturday :ffsparr:

Can't tell if this post is tongue in cheek?

Is the correct answer. Kind of feel like most in the thread didn’t know this though

Did it work, how did we fare at Stamford Bridge?

Well we were nearly got an equaliser in about the 75th minute and given the Premier League is our absolute priority, it wasn’t a bad effort, especially as we were missing players. Would you have preferred it if potter had gone all out in the Carabao, then played the kids at the Bridge?

The things is, we have had a long succession of managers who have treated the cup competitions with contempt. Not having a pop, i've liked most of them, but it's undeniable. I think Wilkins was probably the last not to make significant changes for every cup tie.

The effect of this is that as fans we're forgetting it is possible to put full or nearly full teams out and more importantly, play the fixture more like you would in a league game rather than a pre-season friendly.

We've prioritised league points for a decade, I get the reasons why, but now silverware isn't out of the question, I think we should be aiming higher. I'd like to see us win something.

The young lads played well and the support has been amazing as we all knew where the reds priorities are.
5-0... deserved win.

Would’ve preferred a team with more experience. Family (without much money) bought tickets, expecting to see a potential cup win, spent time travelling to the Amex, but were gutted on arrival to see that Dean Smith had selected a team to win, sadly not Potter. There was a time in football, very last century, when every LC and FAC tie was taken seriously, both clubs desperate to reach the next round.

So Villa put out something pretty close to their first team and won against us. They then put out their first team at the weekend (drew 2-2 with Burnley)

I've have liked us to have done that.

It's incredible to me that you think it would have been impossible for us to approach it like this. Fair enough if you don't think it's the correct strategy, it's that you don't seem to acknowledge it as possible that's interesting to me

Liverpool must be the highest shirt number total in history.

Their fans seem to be considerable in numbers and volume, a case of supporting the club/team not individuals.

Still, money talks and the big boys are in Qatar.

Not money. Rules.

Hats off to Kloppy for putting out a side (unlike Fergy, who defaulted, damaging the league cup for a decade).

How do you work that out? We would have needed to beat Villa, Wolves and Liverpool to get there. Besides, has any Premier League club put a full strength team out in the Carabao Cup?

Citeh. Near as.

I posted this on the ‘missed opportunity’ thread from September after the Chelsea game

“ Ryan - button the cup keeper
Dunk - fit.
Burn - one of only two left footed players fit, the other played
Webster - see Montoya, plus one of only four fit centre halves at the club until that night when Duffy’s injury made it three
Montoya - the only senior right back at the club bar webster. Why risk him?
Bissouma - was declared not fit enough to start by SCR. Managed 45 minutes on Saturday. Not match fit
Stephens - tonilitis
Alzate - fit, but an U23 anyway so that wouldn’t have appeased any of you and he’s filling in on the left (see Burn)
Gross - everyone’s questioning his stamina so three games in a week...?
Maupay - declared unfit due to an infection on a cut on his knee
Murray - allegedly a risk as a sub for Newcastle due to an injury. Don’t know details
Mooy - fit, but the same stamina question marks as gross. Managed a pedestrian hours work out yesterday and presumably the club knew he was needed after propper was injured

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again - we’re down to the bare bones. We had Connolly, Alzate and Baluta in the 18 yesterday. I know Potter has a rep for bringing through kids but there is no way that would have happened already if it wasn’t for the multitude of injuries. We have four left sided players out.

There is no way AJ and Schellotto can be match fit, yet they were on the bench yesterday. That’s desperation from the club. Would anyone have been happier on Wednesday seeing these two struggle like Bissouma did yesterday and need to be subbed off at half time?”

So that’s my justification for Potter to go down the path he did

Your support was spot on. I have to say that Liverpool support gets it, and without the smuggery and arrogance of fans of other clubs we can all mention.

Honorable mention for the Stains support who sang and sang when Leicester defenestrated them recently.
