Don't forget the disallowed goal for Palace as well. Much as I hate Palace that win effectively saved Villa.

Yes, and I can remember expressing my 'surprise' at one of our number on NSC willing Villa to win that game before we were completely safe.
Never understood his/her attitude.??????

have to agree , 3 signings which would have strengthened our team .

They have an excellent midfield now ...
Konsa and Ming's look very solid, Matty cash was a superb signing. And look at their array of attacking talent as well. Spent very very well.

First 11 doesn't have many weaknesses. They are well ahead of us now sadly.

I don't think Leeds are out of it.

The compressed season and thin squad, aligned with the way they play, could see a serious dip in results in the second half of the season.

Here's hoping.

I think strength and depth of squad is going to be key . . . . Vile-a and Leeds, as well as Burnley are prime examples.

We sit reasonably well in that respect, I think . . . albeit a bit light in the out and out striker deparetment.

Talking about strikers, I see ex Bournemouth's Callum Wilson has scored 4 goals for Newcastle so far. I know he has had ACL problems, but at £20m I reckon he could have done a job for us. I wonder whether or not we showed any interest.

Huddersfield started their PL season in 17/18 like an express train, beating Palace 3-0 but struggled later, then getting relegated.

Maupay has also scored 4. How do you fit both Maupay and Wilson into the team?

If we are signing a striker it needs to be different. Perhaps a bit bigger, more powerful back to goal type of striker. Not another Maupay.

Also I think Wilson was on £75k/week territory at Bournemouth and we just won't go there

Too early to be making bold predictions about what teams could do what this season. Plenty of time for teams to hit patches of form/dross.

It’s weird football right now, discussion last night Villa Liverpool in normal conditions Villa go one up in front of a full house do they try to protect what they have or push for more 3000 Scouse behind the goal 40’000 home fans would of made a huge difference.

We’ve started with 2 strikers for 3 consecutive league games, someone like Wilson would not be in place of Maupay. Then we’re in the luxurious position of having Connolly and Zeqiri on the bench.
Regarding wages, we already have a few players earning more than £75,000 p/w don’t we?

Villa have a pretty decent team now - but they should have! They spent around £145m last summer, and have spent another circa £80m this summer. There are also some serious wages being paid, at the same time as zero gate receipts. It astonishes me how some of the mega-rich are prepared to chuck so much money at the Premier League.

No one really knows do they?

Some posters like to state that we do, whilst others insist there is a top wage set and some players are contractually guaranteed it.

There was lots of guesses that Lallana could fit into our salary structure because it would have been given a s a signing on fee, rather than weekly wages.
All guesswork of course, but in the case of Wilson big fee, limited sell on and big salary, was always going to be a non-starter.

Like it or like it not, the club policy is: buy cheap/develop/sell on for a profit.

Let’s not pretend that we haven’t spent a shit tonne of money since arriving in the Premier League.
Trossard £15m
Webster £20m
Ryan £5m
Izquierdo £15m
Maupay £20m
Lamptey £4m
Pröpper £14m
Alireza £18m
Locadia £13m
Mooy £3.5m
Montoya £6m
Bissouma £14m
Bernardo £10m
Clarke £3.5m
Mac Allister £8m
Andone £6m
Burn £3m
There’s also Groß, Suttner, Schelotto, Button, Tau and possibly more.

That’s not including all of the development squad signings like Baluta, Gwargis, Van Hecke, Mlakar, Ostigard,

I understand the club policy, and I’m not disputing it. I do think it’s a tad naive to think someone like Lallana is earning less than £75k p/w.

Yeah, but he won't care if he earns £50k a week and then gets a £5m signing on fee, or just gets £75k a week will he?

I have no idea what Wilson was earning at Bournemouth, but I take your point re Maupay and Wilson, although he was touted around NSC as a possible target at one stage. Some others also thought he would be a good buy, but what do we know.
P.S.I have just looked back on a Callum Wilson thread and the view was that he was on quite a wedge. That and his injury record were against him. It will be interesting to see how he does with the Geordies and how many games he plays.

If I’m missing the point then I apologise, but if combining signing on fees and weekly wages are basically the same thing, and we can afford to give a lump some like £5m up front, is it so wild to think we might be paying someone more than £75k p/w?

I don't think it follows that because we have found a way to accomodate Lallana into our wage structure , that we therefore probably pay £75k a week on other players.
Sure we make other arrangements for players like Dunk, where a new contract is agreed each season
