Loan with a view to buy perhaps?
At least with a loan, at least we won't have given a fair sum of money to a rival for a player who just isn't worth it.

All the same, very excited about Vincente!

Not a Paynter fan, but "Striker with presense" was a priority and allegedly in the bag, and its collapsed?

To sum things up Vicente is a fantastic coup for the club and certainly a very exciting signing. It almost seems to good to be true but he has passed a medical so all would appear fine. Just cant wait to see him on the pitch, bit worried about the injury problems but if we get 20 games out of him, I reckon we got a right result....As for the striker being Paynter, I got to say im a bit underwhelmed to say the least and just a little pissed off.....Today has been a bit like a kid at xmas getting his best prezzie first thing in the morning and what a great prezzie it was and totally unexpected. But then later in the day, finding the prezzie you thought you were getting was out of stock so you got a crappy alternative, that you just have to smile though gritted teeth at.

BBC Paul Fletcher says on twitter Brighton will not be signing Vicente before the window closes, but the deal may still go through on Thursday as he is a free agent.

BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher Brighton will not be signing former Valencia winger Vicente before the transfer window closes. But I understand that talks will continue on Thursday and with the 30-year-old being a free agent, he would still be able to sign for the high-flying Seagulls

Paynter? Is that the best we can do? He's hardly been prolific for some while.

Maybe you should get a reality check . Rewind 18 months ago ? And why dont you look at the bigger picture and think that if the guy has something that Gus sees....maybe thats a lot more than what you know about a footballer. And remember what Gus has done to El Abd, Dicker, Dunk, etc etc.

I agree that Gus has a good track record in getting the best out of players but I think I speak for many on here in saying that the signing of Paynter, whether on a permanent or a loan, would be a bit of an anti-climax after the hype of the last few days. But I do share your view that we've come a very long way in 18 months.

So to sum it up, we havn't signed anyone today?

nor will we...... another massive day of hype and expectation and nothing signed, which for all the assurances of "in the bag" means more twists and turns possible
