Also deserves mentioning:
And Maryland legalised Gay Marriage by popular vote.
Two more -- Maine and Washington. And Minnesota failed to write a ban into its constitution, making it easier to legalize by statute.

Would like to know how the 'result' of a state is worked-out/called ? I mean from what i understand the know the winner of a state before all the votes are counted how can that be democratic ?

If a conservative candidate doesn't get at least x% from a conservative region, he's not winning overall. Not a whole lot different than watching marginal constituencies. If Labour starts losing in the North, or the Conservatives start losing in the Stockbroker belt, you can tell where the country's going.

It's a whole bunch of little arguments a fortiori turned into a mathematical model. All the votes are actually counted, tho that takes another day.

Projected result is a very important analytical tool. If a Sate looks very close on the % of the vote counted, scrutiny of likely voting intentions of those counties in that State yet to return can very accuratly predict the outcome. Things analysts will look for include previous voting patterns, demographics etc. This is how NBC was able to call Ohio so early even though it still appeared to be in play.
