Apropos of nothing, Ursula Von Der Chamberlain is a good name. It sounds like some sort of Teutonic Dominatrix.

The likes of Michael Gove and Dominc Raab would be all over that...

have to wonder what is the purpose of this response. just as we're supposed to be agreeing a future arrangement, throwing around threats to take to a court that is in discussion seems a tad insensitive. plus the new law doesnt break the agreement until its applied, and hasnt passed the lords either, so isnt law yet anyway.

All they've done is issue a formal notice letter. It's part of a process. The root of the problem is that Boris signed up to a Withdrawal Agreement which he didn't understand (and I assume none of the MPs who voted it into legislation earlier this year understood it, either). Now he and his cronies have read the small print they realise they don't like it. Ergo, a massive back-tracking operation which completely undermines the UK's former status as a law-abiding nation. And, incidentally, the Internal Market Bill that's going through Parliament effectively gives the government a general power to ignore any aspect of the Withdrawal Agreement.

In terms of "throwing around threats", the UK moved first - by threatening to disapply International (and Domestic) Law. That seems far worse to me.

Not sure I understand this comment

That's because it makes no sense. Jim D has allowed his frothing Europhobia to get the better of his cognitive faculties. Who knew?

To be fair, at least from the majority NSC point of view, there's probably more frothing about the UK breaking the contract!

My reaction, as a typical remainer, was a little ??? followed by a small :lolol:

I think I also said 'hmmmmm', and thought 'yet more evidence Boris is a dick'.

It took me days to clear up the mess.

sure, its a process, non uncommon. does that usually involve a press conference to issue the notice?

Not that common that a supposedly First World country is happy to rip up The Rule Of Law and negate on parts of a treaty with a major trading party that the ink is barely dry on. The press conference is clearly for the benefit of other potential trading partners who might be contemplating entering into a legally binding contract with these sheisters

As we haven't been in a serious war since 1939-45 I wasn't sure of the form of words to declare one. When I heard UvdC using almost the same form I assumed that she was doing so. I can understand why people wouldn't know this as it was a long time ago, and I guess that 20th century history wasn't taught over the last 6 months.

Don't worry, you can all stand down now.

The usual ramblings of a gammonista - throw in some banal reference of war. The UK government has declared war on itself by planning to potentially break an international treaty it was a signatory to. Sadly it shot itself in the foot in the opening salvos. The tories under Johnson have proven themselves an undemocratic and untrustworthy failed state. When the consequences of their actions hit the fan post January 1st, waving a flag and flying a lone spitfire overhead won't 'life spirits.'

Seems the EU are declaring war on the UK. UvdC has just announced that, regarding us rescinding the Internal Market Bill, 'as of today we have received no such agreement with the UK'. Next step is legal but if that fails watch out.

Which is the type of inflammatory phrase that Brexiters and the Tory press will delight in using to stoke-up further hostility towards Brussels, even though it is our government which is tearing up the Withdrawal Agreement that Parliament - and Boris Johnson in particular - endorsed, and on which the Conservatives fought (and emphatically won) the general election last December.

Maybe there haven't been any (or enough) asylum seekers in dinghies in the English Channel this week, so another distraction is urgently needed to whip-up the anger of the Gammonazis against them "fakkin' forrinners", and desperately take some of the heat off a flailing, floundering, Boris - who'll be gone by Easter.

Brexiteers are drama queens generally

Well to be fair, once you take away the drama and the faux patriotism (if only there were some word in the beautiful literary history of our wonderful language ), there's not a lot left, is there

Bit of a generalisation there Dave.

I did say 'generally'. Have a look through Brexiteers posts. Dramatic hyperbole in so many posts, along with excuses for really obvious governmental lies and deceptions (that only they seem to have fallen for)
