PARENTS taking children to school in off-road vehicles received a ticking-off from protesters dressed as teachers on Tuesday.
Members of the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s chose one of the busiest stretches of the school run – the junction of Belsize Lane and Fitzjohn’s Avenue in Hampstead – for their protest.
They handed out “could do better” school reports and spoof parking tickets.
As they rolled down the windows of their SUVs, some mums were less than happy at being given a list of frightening statistics about the heavy-duty vehicles.
Drivers argued with protesters, saying the large cars were a necessity.
One mum said: “If you had three kids to get to school, you’d have one too.”
Alliance member Brian Gascoigne said: “We want to make driving these vehicles socially unacceptable, just like wearing fur suddenly became socially unacceptable.”
Organiser Sian Berry said: “There’s only one good reason for driving a 4x4, and that’s if you have to drive off-road.
“Otherwise people just buy them as a fashion statement and a status symbol.”
She said estate cars normally had more seats and were safer.
Campaigners want a ban on mainstream advertising of 4x4s and higher taxes and congestion charges – and they say 70 per cent of Londoners support them.

Doubtless written by a tax dodging, benefit scrounging, limp wristed, left wing, eco **** who has never done a days work and moans about capitalist symbols. But is happy to hold his hand out for dole money paid for by the 4x4 drivers.
Probably wrote it during the day because he looks after Otter and Pine Cone, his kids because it is his right to bring them up and be at home for them and every other **** should pay for it.

I've got a Renault Scenic. I can just get three child seats along the back and then just about squeeze a buggy and some bits and pieces in the boot.
I can sympathise with anyone with young kids wanting a 4x4. Forget the safety argument -- it's about practicalities. They're higher (and believe me, arsing around with kids' seat belts takes its toll on the lower back) and generally more spacious. No, you don't need cow bars, but the general design is pretty complimentary to a young family's needs, especially if you have more than two kids.
I would trade my Scenic for a Honda CRV tomorrow. But I wouldn't invoke the Clarkson right to drive it over hedges, ditches and into the path of ramblers.

That's a FAT 200miles a week just taking the kids to school and back.
Of course there are schools nearer us, but we moved to this house after living close by to their school, Cal and Fran were/are both settled and I am very pleased with the education they are receiving and have seen nothing to suggest that a school nearer home will be any better, in fact I've seen a lot to suggest it will be worse.
It's a 400 mile round trip to Elland Road as well and at least my husband or I do it for every home game. Shoot me now!
