My children's health won't be worth much when I've had them in a 3pt belt and they end up dead because I chose to drive a smaller car and not restrain them.

And as I said earlier in the thread, I'd be a lot happier driving something smaller, that has just one row in the back (because of pushchairs etc) and if you can find me a car that I can get my seats across I'd love to hear about it!

So once the starry clan grow out of the need for child / booster seats you'll be getting a prius?

I understand Starry's point about kids needing to be restrained, but I can't believe there isn't a car on the market which doesn't fit 3 booster/car seats across the back. I really really can't. Whats wrong with a Diesel people carrier?

I don't know what a prius is but once the children are grown and I don't have car seats for everyone you can bet your bottom dollar I will drive a smaller car.

Probably by September of this year I will have two of these - they are huge. Right now Cal rides in that, Fran in a 5pt seat and the baby will be in an infant carrier.

Ignore Fran in it it was an installation thing showing how small she is in the seat despite fitting the guidelines to ride in it.

All the people carrier we have looked at do not have removable head rest or ISOfix. And not enough space for me to get the pushchair, dogs, random other stuff I lug around with me.

I'd be interested to see stats for the number of casualties suffered by passengers travelling on buses (schoolbuses or otherwise). OK there's no seatbelts on buses, never has been as far as I'm aware, but they're not exactly death traps are they ?

According to the DFT, the average number of casualties, of any severity (i.e. minor, serious, fatal) between 1994 & 1998 per transport method is as follows:

Cars: 329,768
Buses: 11,321

I know the data are a few years old, but unless bus drivers have recently turned into speed demons and terrorise other road users, I think it's fairly safe to surmise from this that cars are more dangerous.

Full stats are here and here if anyone's really that interested.

How the hell do you live 20miles from your school?!?!?

Isofix is not as good for child seats once they get bigger.

Does an 8 year old really need an entire seat? A booster and a normal seat belt should be fine there.

Anyway there is no way people on here will ever be able to get you to change your mind of your own accord. Unfortunately it will eventually mean the government legislating (nanny state) because the 'general public' are unable to govern themselves.

Starry is coming in for a lot of flak here. It seems the 4x4 is a necessary evil for the family, she has said so much herself, and she has no qualms about saying so which is actually quite refreshing. The fact that they are morelikely to cause injury is probably because of the driver, not the vehicle.

It's all Clarksons fault anyway, him always bleating on about how cars aren't bad for the planet makes him look like an uter TOOL.

Yes, Callum needs a seat. It is far safer for him to ride in a 5pt harness than in a booster back less or not, belt positioning or not.

ISOfix is needed for our new babies infant carrier (though we'll live without it), our other seats are all fastened with a seat belt and tethered.

I live 20miles from the school because we live on one side of Winchester and my children go to school just outside of Andover. And I am about to climb my fat pregnant butt into the demon 4 x4 and drive those 20 miles to retrieve them from school. Then drive 20 back again!

Theres a new SEAT Toledo Diesel on the market which is supposed to be great - its got ISOFIX as standard and about 52mpg (combined) I'd go for a look but we're fine with my old clapper at the moment...

Chappers is right - Starry is getting a bit of flak, and in some instances I think its deserved....HOWEVER it is hard with a larger family to get them around safely - granted its also bloody expensive...again however I'm from a family of three and we seemed to manage it when we grew up without 4x4's.

Safety is a huge gift you can give your children - however I think the issue is - being blase about the environment to the detriment of everyone else, in favour for your own kids, is seen as being a little selfish when it appears that there may be options!!

If posted on here that, at weekends, I got my kicks by walking around pissing on people in wheelchairs and that I didn't give a shit about anyone saying that might be a wrong way to behave, would that be "refreshing" too?

(I don't, by the way. I shit.)

That would probably depend on how much water you drink.
