Ulloa, is he not as good as we all thought?

Ulloa has had an excellent start bearing in mind its a new country, wife still living in spain and expecting a child any day now (i believe), new team / players, new way of playing, high work load due to striker injuries / bans....etc.
Yes he did look tired, no wonder - too much on his mind!!
As regards the CMS partnership, I think it will work. Ulloa needs a strike partner, wasn't it him who flicked on for Barnes on Monday when he hit the crossbar?? Proves a point!

Got a great touch for a big fella eh? Haven't heard that cliche since Peter Crouch.
Anyhow, not knocking him too much just observing that on Monday (slightly less so than Friday) many of his control touches bounced off 4 or 5 yards to opposition players, and a couple of times he tried to 'run' the defender it simply did not work.

First touch second to none, I disagree with your view. Has scored some excellent goals and in time will I am sure become a good all round striker, always takes a little time to hone skills in a new league.
This. He's a classic number 9, a bit of a poacher, scores a lot of goals aroudn the 6 yard box. He needs Ashley Barnes to play off him or one of the 3 named above to play the creative role 'in the hole'. Can't stick a player like Ulloa up front alone and expect him to score

he is a good player and has already got an understanding with ash.........you cant judge him on monday's performance,he got shit service , buckley needs to wake up , cut the fancy shit out and get to the line and float the odd cross or two over .........bucks , dave and kaz when he came on were shite.........completely opposite to what the other lot were doing at the other end...!!
1 in the last 12 I think, and it was a penalty.

The difference between Spanish League 2 and our Championship is massive.
A much more physical and faster game, and fixtures are more frequent during the end of season run in.
Considering he had to adjust to a new style of football, had to play up front alone due to CMS's injury and Barnes's petulance every game during the run in, I think he has a right to look knackered.
A proper English pre season training, and I'm sure he will be even better next season.

I think it was just a question of supply to be honest. Ulloa's not the fastest man alive so he is not going to run through a defence by himself. Towards the end when we started getting desperate, we started hitting crosses into the box and actually looked slightly dangerous.

Both CMS and Ulloa will vastly improve providing they receive the right service,look forward to seeing them both playing together next season.

He scored goals given service in the six yard box when he arrived. A change in tactics and the service disappeared not his fault. I have questioned Barnes during the season, but after his suspension, he looked a different player. Got dropped after scoring two goals and had our best three chances when he came on Monday. Had they both played I think the result would have been different. But who knows. Hope they are both here next season. Think they compliment each other.

Please point out where in that quote I said, or even implied, he had a "good touch for a big man". I think his touch is better than anyone in the team, regardless of size.
Ulloa holds the ball up like I've never seen before. If a striker wins 50% of headers, I'd consider that good, but Ulloa wins closer to 70%-80%, an amazing feat. His ball control when bringing it down is equally good, sometimes it's not always perfect, but most of the time it is. If you disagree, whose touch is better than his?
His long passing is also excellent. If we could have a Ulloa in defence, midfield and as a striker, we'd be a better team.

Thought he was superb against us when you won 3-0, a threat that simply we couldn't deal with at all, not just a tall lump in the right place at the right time either, there was a quality about his movement and his awareness that is rare in this league.
In the play-offs he looked (to me) to be playing a different role, dropping deeper to hold up the ball and play it out again but not quite making the end of crosses like he had been before (albeit there were far fewer crosses for him to go for).
Think he's a very good player though and I'm sure any defender would dread playing against him.

I've been reading the biography of Peter Ward. Amazing how he managed to play 56 games in one season, not missing any, and never being subbed. These days a striker plays four or five games in a row and we worry about them being tired!

I thought Ulloa won the ball well in the air on Monday night, several times he flicked it on well into no mans land. Bloody shame we used them tactics really when he didn't have a partner to run off him.

Yes 56 is mightily impressive, but work rate wise, in the current game I doubt that's equivalent to half the matches played today.
Sure the pitches, science, kit, diet etc is all so so much better now.
But the 2 scales don't follow as 27 year old Ward would not be able to play 56 games, now.
Game was much slower then.

Can't be arsed to read the thread, on Monday he was so isolated up front not even Shearer in his prime would have made a difference. What we need is an attacking midfielder who can support him quicker or maybe play with 2 strikers. The tactics were just too negative for a home team

Ulloa is not as natural born a striker as Ashley Barnes. Neither is CMS. Or naybody else at the club. Barnes will more often than not get you something out of nothing. The other two won't. On the plus side, Ulloa is WAY less energetic than CMS, has about the stamina and turning circle of Trolley, so is far more likely to be found where a front man should be, rather than tearing randomly around the pitch like a Duracell bunny with Tourettes of the legs.
