it would follow that those living in Dartford shouldnt have ULEZ imposed on them, right? because that's whats getting the locals upset, they have shops, schools, GPs etc to get to just the otherside of the line. it may well be popular in the central London borough's where there is indeed low car use, the outer London and bordering counties support isn't so great.
But they don't live in London, it's not imposed on them. If you live in Dartford you only have to pay a ULEZ fee if you travel into the ULEZ zone. It is their choice to drive into the London area with non-ULEZ compliant cars.

If they have an issue with a lack of services available to them in Dartford, like shops, schools and GPs then maybe that's the issue their MP should be tackling instead of trying to overturn a majority favourable scheme in a different county.

The residents of Dartford may dislike ULEZ as a concept, but to say it is imposed on them is untrue. They can choose to live their lives driving non-ULEZ compliant cars without taking them into London, OR they can pay a very low fee to enter the zone for a day, OR they can get a ULEZ compliant car. I think it is disingenuous to believe that the people who cannot do any of those things are numerous, and that their inability to do any of those three things are more valid than the views or the health of the majority of people the ULEZ directly effects.

Given the scrappage scheme eligible to those living within the zone there's not that much to moan and groan about anyway with ULEZ.

If you have a high value car that isn't ULEZ compliant you'll be able to get a decent price for it in areas outside the zone. Folk up north are always looking for London cars to buy given that the rot induced through road salting won't be the problem it is up there. For those with older/lower value cars you can get a £2,000 scrappage payment. Bloody good deal for some.

The fact that 95% of vehicles seen in London are ULEZ compliant and face no charge, in a city where 46% of the population don't own a car, shows that it is both working and not as big an issue as many Tories would like you to think it is.
Most Tory issues aren't as big an as the Tories would like you to think it is, and conversely most of the issues that are facing in this country are the ones they tell aren't a big issue.

That's partly how gaslighting works

Whilst in Athens for some recent football event I noticed fairly few electric cars. Diesel seemed to rule and filling up with it was cheaper than petrol. Guess they have yet to go down the Ulez road.

Diesel is generally cheaper in mainland Europe- just here that they decided to up it after pushing diesel cars strongly in the past

diesel was pushed heavily across europe during the 90's and 00's for its better fuel efficency, to reduce CO2. we changed tack when it was highlighted that comes with higher soot/large particle emissions.

As if that wasn't known at the time!
Just another example of capitalism directing policy. Loads of heavy lobbying -, scrap cars to buy new diesel cars has morphed into scrap diesels to buy petrol or electric cars.

It will be interesting to see how this dynamic shifts in the event of a Labour win at the next election, and particularly if it’s heavy. The dial on what are and aren’t deemed to be the issues that matter could literally flip on their axis. I don’t think many people, and certainly anyone in the media, have really worked this out.
