The fact its dead rubber is the saving grace, it doesn't really matter. THIS time.

I for one seriously hope this little experiment dies on its arse though. I mean who wants to watch a whole football match on a bloody computer screen ? England games are a chance to gather round the TV with some mates at home or in a pub. Its a communal thing. Not quite the same bunching round a 15" laptop is it.

All this guff from Kentaro about it being a "new exciting opportunity" and how "sophisticated" consumers are is a load of patronising bollocks. I wouldn't care was FREE to watch on the internet, I just don't want to watch it on a computer screen because it'll be SHIZER.

Sincerely hope this is a one-off, and not a sign of things to come for games that actually matter.

Sportsnight would only pick it up for midweek games. Saturday nights? Not sure I remember International highlights popping up on Match of the Day, I think MOTD probably just dropped down the divisions and covered Brighton at Leyton Orient, or similar ..... but my memory may be letting me down there.

Sorry, I hadn't realised it was a Saturday (shows how little interest I have in England before tournaments)

I remember international highlights cropping up on MotD - the day England got a draw in Italy (Ince's bandage), I was at the theatre. I had to get home from central London avoiding anyone or anything that might tell me the score so that I could catch it on the highlights programme. That was definitely a Saturday night.

I'm guessing BBC/ITV etc put in shit bids as it's a nothing game, if it was a crucial qualifier I am sure the beeb and co would have put in much larger bids.

If we'd needed points then yes, I'm sure it would have been picked up by a broadcaster. Its the dead rubber aspect thats left it high and dry.
But I still hope this thing fails miserably. A handful of subscribers and a continually crashing live stream would be splendid, then we can consign this scheme to the dustbin.

This is a f***ing joke. ALL England games should be on terrestrial channels. I am not paying £5 to watch this and restricting the amount of people is a joke as well. The should never have been allowed to happen. It's not the fact that it is this game it is the possible precedent this could set.

This is very true but unfortunately its the country who are hosting the game that have the right to sell the rights to whoever they want. The FA and terrestrial channels have no control over this whatsoever. England have already qualified as well so the interest levels might not warrant the terrestrials transmitting the game (in their eyes)

I worked in transmission on the first ever Pay Per View England game (against Albania) in about 2001 and the controversy was massive. The company who transmitted it are no more but they did'nt pay a massive amount of money for the rights, its just that the terrestrials would'nt cough up and they jumped in.

when will people get it in to there think heads that FOREIGN game rights are owned by the host country and they can do with them as they see fit.

It's very simple - as with everything, it's supply and demand. If no-one signs up, then it won't happen again. If people are willing to pay for it like this and watch it, it will happen again.

I just hope it fails this time, cannot imagine wanting to watch footie on my PC screen - but I guess eventually, when PCs & TVs are fully integrated it is going to happen.

Oh what a wonderfully spoilt World these kids grow up in these days. It really doesn't seem that long ago that I wouldn't have dreamt of seeing England games live until we were actually AT the tournament. Certainly a dead rubber away at some Russian outpost would have been an evening of playing with my aerial (ooohh, missus) until I could make out the crackly commentary on the radio.

Now we are looking at COMPLETELY OUTRAGE if every single kick taken in an England shirt isn't available live (and FREE!) on our tellybox.

Following that logic I presume Ricketts was great fun and washdays with the Mangle were a treat to be savoured?

Its called Progress.

Looks like a nice little opportunity for the companies involved to test the water as well.

I actually agree (even though I'm one of the spoilt kids!). The qualifiers never used to be on terrestrial, and I'm not really fussed where they are shown. I just like going down the pub with a couple of mates to watch England play, no matter how insignificant the match. I'm just upset that they have taken away the opportunity to watch En-ger-land in the pub as usual, with and the drinking and post match analysis (further drinking) that goes with it.

the Ukrainians control the rights to their home internationals. They can sell it to whoever they want. Neither the BBC , ITV, C4 of Five showed any interest in picking up the rights package offered by the Ukrainian FA after thecollapse of Setanta. In this case blame the Ukrainians, not the FA.

Internationals wern't played very often on Sarurday afternoons as they interrupted the League programme, The England -Scotlans match in the Home Internationals atr the end of the seaon was usually (?????) live ona saturday afternoon but that was after the league season had finished. Most internationals during the season were played midweek.
So it was Sportsnight highlights

Are you honestly telling me that to lose the ability to see England play a meaningless game in the Ukraine is the equivalent of a return of ricketts?

If you want to get serious and look at the psychology, the difference is basic human needs, and luxury items. I think we would all agree that the eradication of archaic disease is rightly considered a basic need, whereas the provision of live (and free) coverage of ALL England games is a higher level need, which only those spoilt by the high tec, on demand World we live in today, would ever consider to be on a par with other basic needs.

I just think everyone should put their toys back in the pram, we get PHENOMENAL tv coverage of sport these days, and as soon as something isn't readily available that doesn't mean the entire fabric of society is in danger of collapse.

To the point where we have progressed to a situation where an England international is only available pay per view on a low resolution computer screen.

I was referring to the notion that people should be grateful for the fact that the game is available at all idea posted earlier rather than returning to the wireless or semaphore...but I take your point of course.
