They have even had the cheek to say it gives people choice !!!!

As some have mentioned, watching on a PC screen doesn't come close to watching in HD - something the broadcasting industry is keen to persuade us to take up - how does watching football on the internet drive the HD plan forward ?

Trust me the plan to drive HD forward means mugs like you and me forking out for it. The broadcast industry could well do without the cost of producing HD content at the moment anyway, most of them are struggling to stay on air with standard definition content (over 90% of what we see) they've got currently.

Well at least Somerset and Sussex are on TV, and there's a whole weekend Heineken Cup action

Football is now a "Premium Event".

For those who like to sit back smugly thinking the English variation is the "best in the world", fine.

.. but don't start moaning when you have to pay it.

It's what "everybody" wanted after all.

I have my doubts whether this website will cope anyway. Watching a live stream of an event can be volatile at the best of times with the constant buffering. I can foresee plenty of pissed off punters who've shelled out for the game, only to have it pausing every 30 seconds for the buffering to catch up.

Hope so anyway. I just want this to be a gigantic FAIL.

I believe they are limiting the subscribers.

Have you heard you they have got in as the summariser?

Sven isn't it ? Another reason to give it a swerve if his succinct and always enlightening press conferences are anything to go by.
"Vell, errrrr......first half was good. Second half not so good...."

Anyhoo, they're limiting it to a million subscribers (can't believe they'll get anywhere NEAR that). Even so, I still wouldn't have much faith in a live stream keeping up over 90 minutes, when they have no real idea how many are going to sign up for this.

A colleague of mine had to install the backend storage array connecting to the servers providing this service. When he told me what they have bought I was concerned, I'm really not sure they have designed the solution to cope with the demand....

Why do they need a storage array for this when they are just downlinking from a sat and feeding out? Presumbly on some kind of embedded flash? We host sky sports soccer saturday between 2pm-6pm on a Saturday and apart from actual bandwidth these things are relatively low powered

No idea about the technology involved in providing the service from Satellite to server and then out to the internet, but the storage involved is slow... I assumed it would be some form of buffering system.

I will take your word for it that this will not cause an issue.

For anyone with a motorised satellite dish , the feedhunters will find the uplink and provide the transmission details on sites such as satelliweb.com , quite often the signal is sent unencrypted and you can tune in for free.

If the video quality is anything compared to the crappy audio on Player experienced last Saturday this will keep the number of complaints down. This better not screw up the commentary of the game at Yeovil when the England game hogs all the bandwidth on Perform's servers.

I'd imagine the Ukrainian Channel is free to air anyway. I think the channel is actually called "Football TV Channel" and long as your dish is big enough, the UK is well within the footprint.

The Ukrainian channel "Futbol" is on the Sirius 4 satellite at 4.8 east but unfortunately this is an encrypted channel. If the (hopefully free) feed is also on this bird you should be able to get it with a 1 metre dish.
