I'm just delighted Mike Thornton won. I knew him for four years as a colleague who sat next to me, and a friend albeit about 20 years ago. Lost touch with him a long time ago, however. He's a bit posh but a good bloke and local (he's always lived in Winchester) and is a principled, sound kind of guy and quite likable. Give me a bloke like him over a career politician who has never actually worked any day of the week.

Certainly was, should have kept Brown in, he would have this financial crisis licked b'now.

Hmm. The chancellor who led us into the worst financial crisis in history. I think not.

And btw, under the Tories we would have been in an equally bad mess if not worse. So my comment is apolitical.

Pork pie land.
I am delighted that Call me Dave has been shown what voters thing of his policies - of lack of them!

With such a massive vote for UKIP, it should show the Conservatives that votes want strong Right-wing policies and not to waste valuable parlimentary time on minority issues like "gay" marriages. Who gives a f***? It does not look like many of us judging by his party's vote!

I just hope that this causes enough of a backlash to force him and Osbourne out, and we can get a stronger leadership before the next General Election.

Where is Maggie when we need her again?

You know that for a fact do you? Or is it your opinion presented as a fact

I assumed it was the voters who have thrown Italy into chaos?

Give the electorate a popularist pledges and they will vote for you.ie...kick out immigrants...stamp on the bankers...redistribute wealth from greedy millionaires, ...tax expensive houses.....stop politicians fiddling expenses....kill all murderers peodophiles rapists......etc etc. he just tagged into the Italian hatred of people telling them what to do with their lives.,

I take your point. Not having followed the Italian election closely, I presume what he is doing is consistent with what he stood for, or is what he said he would do.

Beppe Grillo himself didn't actually stand in the election. He just led the moVement that selected its candidates from internet polls of people who support his message. And what is his message? Nothing more complicated than "tell the politicians to f*** off". More than a quarter of the voters agreed with him.

Excellent navel gazing on 5Live at the moment, but the more things change, the more they stay the same. Disgruntled Tory Bigwig " The trouble is we are not getting our message through to the voters " Disgruntled ex Tory " it's obvious that David Cameron is not listening to the public " same old, same old.....
The trouble the Tories have is that their message IS getting through to the voters. They don't like it.

It was badly worded. I should have said something along the lines of 'in my opinion' or 'I believe'.

I am not so pompous to think that I would know what may happen in a day, an hour or even a minute, let alone the things which may have happened were the past to have followed a different path.

I thought the same thing myself. David Cameron et al are alienating their core traditional voters who are probably aghast at what they may see as a movement away from more historic Tory pastures.

It's hard to see a way back for them. Unless Scotland gains early independence and then for better or worse we'll be stuck with a one party state.

Were they not saying at the time that the banks were OVER REGULATED?

By the very same people who were dolling out tripple a ratings to countries who were bankrupt and their banking systems built on sand......oh hang on, that is why we are all panicking now as our so called rating has gone down by a sqiliiionth of a apple crumble topping point.
/
That is what happens when capitalism is allowed unabashed.....labour/Tory/Whig/... They are all the same and pander to a fraction of the needs of the population.....what other set of human beings would challenge another set of human beings who worked out that is immoral and anti social to take bonuses worth 20 x and upwards of their salaries, and look to oppose this measure and in the same breath cut the benefit of a bloke who lost both his legs from sceptecemia because " he is scrounging 70 pounds a week as he actually can work in a florist ". As reported on south east yesterday.

I am not a political animal at all but sometimes I wonder where the goodness and charity of helping people in need has gone...maybe it went and has been replaced by the " I,m alright jack" attitude that seems to have reappeared.

I hate this government but we can argue all day long who can fix it, should it be this party, that party, it's Labour's fault, it's Osbournes fault. Who can fix the recession? It matters not a jot. This country is not in a recession. It's in decline. The quicker people are more honest and acknowledge this fact the quicker we can start to sort out the problem.

That's true but to be fair to Osborne, the elected US/UK administrations and financial regulators at the time, the banks did set up a committee/group whose sole purpose was to convince the authorities, politicians etc that all was well and keep them away from further regulation. I can't remember the name of this group atm but might look it up later.
As Paul Tucker, one of the DG's at the BOE, said at a Merrill Lynch Conference in April 2007* - "In 10 years time, we may therefore.......be better informed".
* "A perspective on recent monetary and financial system developments"

I'm praying for a Michael Howard esque lurch to the right. There would be absolutely no chance of the Tories gaining a majority at the next election. Cameron was the first leader that they've had since Major that is (sort-of) electable.

All the Thatcher worshipers seem to forget that had it not been for Michael Foot's "longest suicide note in history" manifesto , she wouldn't have won a second term. A lurch to the right suits The Labour Party & to lesser degree The Liberals just fine.

That's a very important point in my view. I think that we are expecting, that as in previous times, we will one day magically return to times of growth and wealth. We really need to start thinking about a world where growth as we previously knew it is no longer possible. Europe is on it's last legs and we need to accept that most people, above all the politicians, bought into the idea that the boom/bust stuff was over. We all need to be more responsible about how we spend and what we do, but ultimately the politicians are the ones who have to make the decisions and unless we actively take part in influencing those decisions, we are in trouble.

Eastleigh is a great example. The UKIP vote shows that people on a larger and larger scale, realise the main parties have no real position on immigration. UKIP will be found out, but I hope this is a big kick up the arse to the main parties to actually say what they feel about Europe and immigration. It's very simple. As a prosperous country in the EU, people will always want to come here and forge a life ahead of other countries. Where do the tories and labour stand? Is it a good thing and if so, how do we manage that?

For the record, i'm a liberal, have always voted lib dem or green. But anyone who doesn't recognise that immigration is a real issue in this country right now, really has to have a long hard think. We can bang on forever about what they contribute and I think it is massive, but no party in this country has a clear view apart from UKIP and that for me is disgraceful.
