Odds have shortened drastically over the last few days with reports the Tory vote is haemorrhaging and defecting to UKIP in massive numbers. This could be a nightmare result for Dodgy Dave and Cleggy.

Embarassing, yes, "nightmare result" is a little over the top IMHO. They're a pretty unpopular mid term government in a by-election. They really should lose.

Until we have an electorial system that has a degree more proportionality the GE will only ever be a 2 horse race.

No harm in any protest party getting a seat. It does without doubt get a debate going and change policy by the main parties.

You would think Labour would have a shout with such an unpopular government and them being the official "opposition".

Eastleigh is one of those constituencies where traditional Labour support puts them in 3rd place behind the LibDems and Conservatives , they still wouldn't have a cat in hells chance of winning a mid term protest.

Fair enough - here's hoping UKIP take it then !

Not in Eastleigh isn't it leafy suburbia?

.

Haha. No, no it isn't.

(Parts of the constituency, like HINEYland are leafy suburbia, but Eastleigh itself is far from it. It is a thoroughly working class town, built to service the (once) very major railway works. Its now home to lots of Poles, Irish and a proportionatey enormous number of disabled folks).

Thanks for that Hans. I assumed from it's political history that it had to be quite posh. It was as blue as they come from 1970-92 (though I guess most of the South was) & then there was a by-election in the dark days of Major when stranguwanky man killed himself.

Since then it's been a Liberal stronghold. Labour have not had a strong footing there since the 60's.

Arguably, the GE has never looked LESS like a two horse race in the last 100-odd years.

Is that why the old PopeMobile is often seen around Hampshire ???

No hope for UKIP, especially if the weather is cold, the crusties won't come out and those are the only fools who will vote for him.

Same here. Will be great if UKIP take it. About time we had something different in politics.

I see the Beer, Baccy & Crumpet party have a candidate in the race; I think they would be suitably different!

Well, at least if UKIP had a seat, the BBC would have some kind of post-hoc justification for the amount of airtime they get in national political coverage (much more than the Green Party who have an MP and control - I think - two councils).
