The biggest damage cyber / hybrid warfare can cause is to make your enemy focus on cyber / hybrid warfare at the expense of focusing on traditional warfare.

We mustn't get sucked into the trap.

a fair observation. on other hand it is the most likely way a enemy state would carry out "first strike". traditional warfare is unlikely in the foreseeable as countries are more economically interdependent then ever before. and its difficult to argue for large conventional army to hold back traditional enemy, when the lands the enemy will invade first dont invest in defense.

However, why worry about Nuclear escalation if you can get your man in to the White House or No.10 ?

Well quite

And this totally ignore the fact that we've signed the non proliferation treaty which legally binds us to be working to reduce our stockpiles.
It also ignores the fact that this just encourages our enemies to boost their supplies.
It also ignores the fact that the most pressing defence item we need to be spending money on is cyber security
It also ignores the fact that nurses are getting a 1% pay rise despite putting their lives on the lines to save us for the past year.

You do have to wonder whether this government is the most brain dead in our country's history
It is because our enemies have broken the non proliferation treaty and are arming themselves to the teeth , China and Russia at an alarming rate and North Korea only announced this week a new bigger better ICBM that we need to level the playing field . A deterrent only works if you actually have an effective one .

If anything demonstrated the disconnect between this government and the problems this country faces this is it.

More nukes for the UK, the answer to a question nobody is asking.
What does that even mean ?
We unfortunately are in the most geographically important part of Europe when it comes to a deterrent from Russia , and with Putin in charge and seeking to change the law in order to keep himself in power indefinitely our defences whether you or i like it or not are a necessity .

Russia has long known we have the early warning systems to alert the USA in time for them to make a retaliatory strike in the event of a Russian first strike , RAF Fylingdales was created for such an event .

As someone that generally supports the current Government I am also baffled by this. Other than job creation maybe? Really can't see the point. Are we missing something?

I'd rather they spent the money on increasing the size of our armed services, and extending their remit to include community projects. The military have been invaluable in helping with Covid projects and I think they could do more like this with more resources.

We are allegedly getting rid of our Tank Regiments , presumably that will pay for the extra fireworks .

Army is going very big on Drones and has been for about 5 years now.
They've been on excercise all around the Globe with different countries showing them our capabilities etc.
My lads been doing the drones for 14 years now and is always off somewhere showcasing it.

So they can make cuts in other areas and say they have boosted the nukes to compensate.

It is typical Johnson. All headline, little substance.

The number of nukes we actually have is a state secret. Boosting the published theoretical maximum number is just a headline.

The defence equivalent of "Building a bridge to Ireland".

Johnson does this time and time and time again.

No it is not a state secret , The Stockholm International Peace Research Institutes states the UK currently ( 2020 ) has 200 warheads .

to be fair, a large fleet of drones armed with ASM will do more to dominate the plains of eastern Europe, than a small fleet of tanks. and they can be operated from hundreds of miles away, literally be home for tea after a shift of blowing up T-72s.

Let's get rid of all weapons, spend it on other things and let countries like China and Russia do what they want in the world. It's not like they're spoiling for a fight all the time. Besides, isn't it responsibility of other countries like the US to defend us? Besides, we shouldn't intervene in other countries, except of course when we see them murdering innocent people on the tele and the national outcry is 'why aren't we doing something'? I mean this in the sense that diplomacy hasn't worked; because it nearly always does; countries like Iran are always falling back into line the moment we threaten to blockade their ambassadors ferrero rocher from getting through...

I hadn't seen anything on the news about this, and certainly hope this isn't right, but

Russia condemns UK plan to increase nuclear weapons as threat to ‘international stability’

Russia has condemned the decision by the UK government to boost its arsenal of nuclear weapons, saying the move would harm international stability. The UK will increase the cap on its nuclear warhead stockpile by more than 40 per cent, prime minister Boris Johnson revealed as part of his foreign and defence policy review on Tuesday.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/russia-nuclear-weapons-uk-boris-johnson-b1818339.html

After many, many years of all the major powers around the world working on reducing nuclear warheads, just the 2 questions

1. Why ?
2. How are we going to pay for it given our current debt situation ?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL94g6AmiBY
why don't they wind their necks in a bit ???

He almost certainly has a personality disorder. He has a rather disordered mind.

Johnson has liberated us from an EU money sponge , opened trade talks with Japan , Canada , USA , Australia , China , India and individual countries within Europe . He has achieved more trade since Jan 1st than the EU has done in the last 25 years , over 1500 finance companies opening in the UK , even Cadbury`s is coming home , anyone want to bet on American Express returning ? .

Look if you don`t like Boris fine , but don`t sell out the progress to this country for a cheap shot at a politician "you don`t like " . The EU said we fail , they were wrong we are thriving , yes i can hear the calls that we are skint , so is the entire WORLD on the back of this pandemic , which makes the progress Boris is making all the more impressive .

I have no time for anyone who , when wrong or proven beyond doubt to be wrong , wont admit that they are indeed wrong , but Boris owns it and owns it all , only a narrow minded person wouldn`t respect that . If you want change for change`s sake then good luck because anything that is working or has a chance to work will be torn down , that is what the opposition does .
