It presumably suggests there is recent intel- perhaps along the lines of this Nigerian guy on the Detroit flight- that certain groups are stepping up their activities.

And they're hardly likely to put it out in the open as to exactly what, why, or where they got that from are they? We get counter terrorism briefings at work fairly regularly and it never fails to amaze me just how much is really going on out there that isn't made public (for obvious reasons), and how the security services ever find out about it. Then you think- what's being plotted that they haven't picked up on yet? It's quite scary really.

they say intelligence. i find it a little hard to swallow and suspect paranoia and possibly a tinge of political "doing somthing".

i've come to the conclusion following the woefull fail of the Detroit bombing "attempt" that the so called Al quaeda (whatever) are more a boggy man of the west than the real terror organisation portrayed. if they were as well organised and well funded as we are led to believe they could be launching weekly attacks.

our government is more responsible for creating a state of fear and terror, over reacting to past events. i dont even think its by intentional or conspiracy, its just perpetual worry they get caught doing nothing. i recall the 80's though when Irish were regualry setting off bombs or triggering threats, we didnt have "Threat Levels" then, we just got on with it. they need to change the attitude of fear, not our lifestyle.

I am sorry but that is absolute rubbish. the modern society, not the one 30years ago has continually asked the govt. when something happens "why did you not warn us". the Security Services, police and others are roasted in the public eye for not giving a 'heads up' to an attack. Now they use a threat system that when increased or decreased certain parts of the public accuse them of scare mongering.

The threat levels allow all parts of the police, security services, army et al... to increase its protective measures, thus increasing the protection of YOU. this all came from recommendations after previous attacks (9/11, 7/7) that highlighted that the public needs to know when there is a planned attack against them. knowledge is power.

Why would they raise the threat levels for no reason? this cost millions in extra police and security across the country, not forgetting that the country is broke! some one, some where is in the latter stages of planning an atack against our population and our nation. Oh and by the way the threat level is on recommendation from the intelligence services and not some frightened politician on a Friday scared about losing their seat. There are people who want to kill you, me, us deal with it.
