Twenty years ago today, we beat Sunderland at Withdean.

No idea how it was two decades ago, but there we are…

In front of a crowd of 6,647, 10 man Albion won 2-1.

Mark McCammon with the winner.

To date this is the last time we have played Sunderland in the league. They would go up as Champions and we have avoided them in the league, ever since.

Sit back and enjoy.

We played a whole lot of shit hoofball under McGhee.

I think that's likely the least memorable season in which i've watched Albion.

Thanks for posting. Dermot Gallagher, Des, Ray Bloom, industrial tackles from Virgs, McGhee calling the place a dump and even now, thinking "Oh here we go" when they got one back with 10 mins to go 😄. If you'd told me sitting in my seat there that 20 years later we would be playing in Europe and fans would be losing their shit after a loss in the top 10 of the Premier League I wouldn't have believed you.

I would argue the following season would be better to forget!
We've had relegation seasons sure. But have we ever been as uninspiring and negative as we were under McGhee.

I actually like the bloke, he didn't have much to work with. But McCammon? What a shit player.

Still not a red for Virgo - good tackle!

I remember a group of Sunderland in J block getting sang cheerio to and as we did they scored and turned round celebrating - got a bit fractious.

That Thornton was a good player for them - not to be confused with the Thornton we got later on.

Was that one of the NSC sponsored games? I recall being sat in front of the directors row of seats, the Sunderland dignitaries were very fair, no snarky comments, complimented the way we played and admired the condition of our pitch.

Feels like we've played Sunderland more often, but we really haven't. Was one of my first away matches in 1986
