Exactly!I was there. 20yrs ago!? Bloody hell.
Twenty years ago today, we beat Sunderland at Withdean.
No idea how it was two decades ago, but there we are…
In front of a crowd of 6,647, 10 man Albion won 2-1.
Mark McCammon with the winner.
To date this is the last time we have played Sunderland in the league. They would go up as Champions and we have avoided them in the league, ever since.
Sit back and enjoy.
We didn’t play Sunderland the year before. We’ve only been in the same league as them once in the last thirty years. The NSC sponsored game was season before versus Sunderland I think - can remember as pre match walking round the pitch McGhee said he fancied Bristol City in the play offs - yes we were sat in row in front of Sunderland board I think
I remember that re. their fans in Block J. Coincidentally earlier this evening I was talking to my Father in law (Sunderland fan from Sunderland) about this game and the absolutely hammered Sunderland fan that kept saying “go on the lads” till he was ejected. Went to the return at SOL that season, great stadium. Would like them to come up this year.Still not a red for Virgo - good tackle!
I remember a group of Sunderland in J block getting sang cheerio to and as we did they scored and turned round celebrating - got a bit fractious.
That Thornton was a good player for them - not to be confused with the Thornton we got later on.
I also have a father-in-law from Sunderland and he's the reason I want them to remain firmly in that division. He was nothing but snarky about the Albion for years. It was beautifully poetic that we took their place in the PL in 2017. Long may they continue to stay in the EFL.I remember that re. their fans in Block J. We did play them in the League Cup in one of the first ever games at the Amex.Feels like we've played Sunderland more often, but we really haven't. Was one of my first away matches in 1986
