Absolutely, but there is pressure not to produce series like that especially if you want to sell it abroad.

We are very very lucky in this country that programme makers have the freedom to do something like that and walk away. Privileged in fact.

It would never happen in America, they think we are very very odd that we would only make a 6 week run of anything.

Absolutely, we end up with 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers...comedy genius that people still talk about almost a quarter of a century after it was screened...contrast that with the average American Sitcom that runs for about 120 episodes, most of which is about as funny as a dose of the clap at best, if not complete and utter garbage!

Although over the years there has been some absolute dross produced over here over 6 episodes.

What seems to happen is America is the pilot, the initial screenings, the cast changes and the long run (or very very short one).

Now of course, ( although it really isn't to my taste at all ), the USA produces some brilliant comedy.

But Fawlty Towers and The Office (UK Version) simply wouldn't happen over there.

For one they have to spend millions advertising a series and many viewers wouldn't pick up on it for a few programmes anyway.

Sometimes people need to take a step back and consider what would happen if we went to a purely advertising based system.

ITV (and the other commercial channels) produce some brilliant programming too, but it's a worrying time going forward for the commercial channels because their advertising revenue is drastically down.

I don't think programmes like "The Jungle" or X-Factor are trash TV personally. I find both shows hugely entertaining, the first of which is my highlight of the year if I'm honest.

No JD or Turk?!?!?!

Turk and Dr Cox are the only characters left or so I've read. JD, Elliott, Carla and Dr Kelso will make guest appearances. No Janitor full stop. It's going to be awful:nono:

I thought I'd be lone in mentioning Top Gear - but apparently not. It is so formulated and fake now, it is very boring. Oooo, lets' say something controversial and we'll get a laugh. It is all completely scripted.

Hmmm, what else ? All Soaps - definitely. All reality shows - mais oui. Unfortunately with 500 channels to choose from these days, there is going to be a load of rubbish on most of it - and repeats are cheap.

There's always the OFF button though.

In fairness, the American version of The Office is now in its 8th series I think, and actually remains quite funny. But generally I tend to agree with you - comedy series should be decomissioned after 2 series, or 3 series maximum.

...and leaving you wondering "who on earth is still watching this?!"

I'll start with the somehow-still-commissioned:

The Weakest Link.

Seriously? Who still sets the Sky+ for this one?

No one is taken in by Anne Robinson's RUBBISH put downs anymore, the prize money is LAUGHABLE considering the amount of tension they try to generate, so how is this still on?

More examples please.

Don't understand! Are you saying you have only just clicked that the put downs as not genuine? Also, the money is the same as it has ever been. The show is not about life changing money. Personally I do not look out for when it is on but surely the only answer to the thread question is the Last of the Summer Wine.
