The Beeb did a nice look at why Trump lies all the time. Now I'd like to see a follow up on why some people are so gullible that they actually believe him.

You could ask the same question of Johnson - another pathological liar and someone else with no attention to detail and who has turned indolence into a fine art. Yet for some reason, he's hailed as some sort of charismatic genius. Why are people so easily fooled?

Absolutely right.

I approve of the policy of the political sketch writer for The Guardian, John Crace, who refuses to include any quote from Boris Johnson in his articles.

Instead, he replaces everything Johnson says with the phrase “pifflepafflewifflewaffle”.

It absolutely hits the nail on the head, and the fact he’s remorselessly unrelenting in doing it, over and over again, only makes it more powerful.

It’s something I’d like to see every media outlet do. How wonderful it would be if every comment or announcement Boris ever makes is reported in every newspaper using the words “pifflepafflewifflewaffle”.

That’s why I rarely read the Guardian. What he’s saying currently is fantastic. Worth reporting word for word. He’s in a time lapse. Campaigning for an election he never got whilst suffering set back after setback.

Then when he gets home to No.10 he has scabby Cummings telling him he’s a f**king disgrace.

Trump? It's easy. Sixty-odd million voters -- in exactly the right states -- said basically "So he's a liar? Big deal. He hates the same people I hate. Hand me the goddamn ballot."

As long as he cam make it look like he's going to get the Muslims, and the Mexicans, and the uppity women, and the liberals, and the gays, and the black people, he's even money for re-election.

Whether he actually does any of that doesn't actually matter. His voters vote as a form of self-expression, as a performative act.

They don't expect anything concrete in return -- which is just as well, because, a war with Iran aside -- they're not going to get anything concrete in return.

I'm an American and a Trump supporter. I voted for him and so did most the people I know, it had nothing to do with any of the things you mentioned. Over 62 million Americans voted for Trump, so don't let the media fool you into thinking that an entire quarter of the US are all just a bunch of racists. I voted solely for him on 3 main reasons, 1) Obama and his Secretary of State Hillary botched Libya, Syria, Crimea, Iran, and Iraq, and I didn't want his handpicked successor continuing his terrible foreign policy. 2) I support building a wall on our southern border, I live in Texas so this has been a hot-button topic for us for decades, and he was the only one for it. 3) He promised to "drain the swamp" against lobbyists, which I support, so I thought a non-career politician might be the one to get it done.

New election coming up in a few months, and I'll see how it shakes out. Depending on who the Democratic nominee is, I might have to vote for him again.

Utter bollocks, you’re just repeating the crap spread by the left about average republican voters. To just say there are 60 million odd racist homophobes, etc., etc. is boring and patently ridiculous. It’s the Democrats slide into socialism and extreme leftist policies that they can’t abide.

Watch the debate next week and see for yourself what a bunch of pandering lying fools they have running, promising things that are impossible to deliver.

I’m no big fan of Trump and wish we had better, but the alternative choice we have at the moment will ruin this country.

I agree with Rex, he's got it about spot on from my experience. No, there aren't 60 million racist homophobes, but there are a huge number of people who are one or the other, or have other fears that Trump panders to - or sheer ignorance on things like the climate crisis.

Of course there are racists and homophobes, Democrats and Republicans alike. The Democrat Party is historically the party of racism. It is false to say that Trump panders to them. To oppose open borders and welfare to illegal immigrants isn’t racist, I’m sure you would oppose it in England.

And what exactly is the climate crisis? We’ve had ‘ten years left’ for the last fifty years.

You can have different political opinions (even if you use some REALLY lame 'historical' excuse) but don't be a complete idiot on the climate, that's just pure ignorance and denial.

The ‘REALLY’ lame historical excuse is true. Go ahead and explain the climate to us all, seeing as I’m so ignorant...

Yes, I know it is true that it is historical. That's the point, it's history and has nothing to do with the present, therefore is totally lame to bring up as some kind of defence of present-day Republican hatred.

As for the climate, open your eyes and do like I do - study what is actually happening to the climate around the world. Try looking beyond your own little corner of nowhere and educate yourself on what is really happening instead of staying ignorant because it suits your political view. But thanks for proving my point about pure ignorance on issues like climate.

The ‘present day’ narrative you portray of Republicans is totally false, left wing propaganda. As for the climate, you have said absolutely nothing.

Ohhh sounds just like right wing republican propaganda.

Suggest you read books and articles that are peer reviewed and make deductions based on that. Reading bollocks written by some alt-right bigot isn’t acceptable. Similarly argument for the extreme left.

As for climate change see above. Read before denying ... simples.

The Democrats are 'socialists', and their policies represent 'extreme leftist positions', only in a world where you can call this 'beer'.

In a world with Die Linke, and La France Insoumise and Podemos, the whole notion that the US Democratic Party is somehow 'socialist' is risible. It's embarrassing anyone sharing a continent with them, or even Blair's Labour -- never mind Clause IV Labour -- making such a category error.

Unless I missed Mrs. Clinton calling for the commanding heights of the economy to be placed in the hands of the workers one night while I was sleeping, of course.
