Complete and utter waste of time and money.
Just get your cash at the Post Office and be CAREFUL (ie hire the safe in your room), or better still, take a CARD with you and make cash withdrawals when you get over there. Travellers cheques are for insecure spackos.

What he said.

I hate traveller's cheques, absolute pain in the arse.

If you must insist on using them, use the credit card form of them now offered by AmEx. Basically, you 'top up' the card with a certain amount before you leave, then use it wherever you're going as you would a normal AmEx card.

the pre paid cards are taking off at the moment other companies are offering them aswell (although amex offer by far the best service!)

I can't see the dollar fall stopping too soon, buying travellers cheques now could easily end up a worse decision than those Pipex shares.

Why should I buy a pre-pay card when I am charged to withdraw the money each time as opposed to travellers cheques ?

You don't have to withdraw the money, you pay for stuff with the card like you'd use a debit card here.

But what if I want cash then it would cost me money to withdraw

Do what I do and take some cold hard cash with you for general use (ie: snacks, small purchases etc...).

Last time we had "hard cash" all £800 was stolen on the first night:rolleyes:

I have a recollection of using Amex Travelers Checks in New York as if they were cash. In other words, wander into a shop and buy something for $20.40. Pay for it with a $20 travelers check and coins to the value of 40¢.

Or is my memory faulty?

Well, I've done it on every foreign trip I've been on (4 trips to the US included) and never had so much as a cent stolen. Was it stolen from your hotel room, or directly from you?

Stay in less scummy areas, and use the safe provided in any decent hotel room.

Hardly a scummy area as a massive camp site and as I have suspected for a while you only read what you want to as not a hotel room.
