Post written before you said "flat". Massive camp sites are, by definition, scummy.

What a stupid generalisation.

One of the best camp sites I've been to in France with caravans, chalets and also main camping when warmer around an hour from Paris. 6th year running we have been there as well.

Every large camp site I've ever seen has been full of Gillingham fans, raggedy tents, kids running around screaming madly, etc, etc.

I wouldn't say that travellers cheques are for "spackos", that is a bit of an over generallisation, it really depends on where you are travelling to. If for arguments sake it is somewhere like North America or Europe where there is easy access to ATMs then it doesn't make sense to take any, you can just draw cash out as and when needed. However, if you are going off the beaten track then it definitely does...if you are unlucky enough to be robbed then the bank will replace them, that won't happen with cash and it could be ages before you get a new bank card delivered (to your UK address).

I don't have any intention of going to France, its a country I do not like, and use it for passing through to the rest of Europe if I have to go through it at all. Anyway, I thought the campsite in question was in the US, so why are you using France as an example?

As I said you only read what you want to, I have never once stated a campsite in the USA

Look what they did to all the campsites in the 1800`s in America. Good move.

What he said.

I hate traveller's cheques, absolute pain in the arse.

If you must insist on using them, use the credit card form of them now offered by AmEx. Basically, you 'top up' the card with a certain amount before you leave, then use it wherever you're going as you would a normal AmEx card.

American Express has decided to discontinue the Travellers Cheque Card.

I said it was a scummy area, you then said it wasn't a scummy area - it was a massive camp site

Then you claim you never said it was a camp site. Hence you are contradicting yourself.

You said it was a camp site not me as I said you read what you want to.

BTW France has the best camp site in my opinion.

What a pity as cheques and travellers cheques are almost obsolete. A plastic alternative is a way forward but obviously Amex dont see a profit margin in it to make it successful. Other providers are already in the market so the best option is to get a card , top it up with an amount which will cover your spending sprees whilst on holiday.

You were the person that mentioned a camp site, read the thread again and you'll see this quite clearly. Slinging around accusations like that when you're clearly the one that's wrong isn't a good idea.

I have a recollection of using Amex Travelers Checks in New York as if they were cash. In other words, wander into a shop and buy something for $20.40. Pay for it with a $20 travelers check and coins to the value of 40¢.

Or is my memory faulty?

We were in Florida last year and were able to pay using travellers cheques and get change ie buy something for $30, sign a cheque for $50 and get $20 change.
