That explains why the queue was moving slowly.

I was on one of the trains with eight carriages, but the fact that there were four carriage trains running too is ridiculous.
For many people aiming to get a train to Brighton it would actually be quicker to get a luxury length train from Falmer to Lewes, then cross platforms and double back to Brighton. You'd probably have time to grab a quick pint in the Lansdown and still be quicker 😀

The trains weren't short formed, they are scheduled to run as 3 or 4 carriages, they just aren't strengthened its a massive problem, and it isn't very good. But there aren't anymore carriages available midweek, that's the truth of the matter sadly. With rush hour services having to operate midweek, and no engineering work displacing stock, its going to be the case until June 2024 at the earliest, when I believe there will be more stock. To make the trains longer post match will require additional staff as the trains will need to do attach / detach procedures.

2) there was a massive row on my train with everyone moaning about the lack of carriages being the Tories fault. And one lone nutter defending the government to the hilt and blaming the train companies to which he got so emotional I thought someone was gonna lamp him.

(I'm guessing it's the governments fault ?)

Well this is promising news for next season at least. I had no idea there were any plans to increase the stock levels

Usual walk up the hill, junior had parked there after driving straight from work. Back home in B Hill before 11. Should add that he spent the game in soaking wet clothes after getting drenched in the pre-match downpour on his way to the Amex 🙄
Learnt my lesson years ago on that one.... I had to buy new trousers ( of some sort) at the shop . Top half was dry thankfully. Ditched my pants and socks.... I get the bus from the downs now....

Firstly let me apologise for shooting the messenger. They are scheduled to run as 3 or 4 carriages, is not a very satisfactory argument, when you are queueing behind hundreds of people predictably waiting for a train service. The privatisation of the railways, was supposed to be all about market forces with commercial companies dynamically responding to demand in new and innovative ways. The difference between last night and the Athens game, was hanging around at Hove, for the new improved West Coast service, we didn't have a 12 car shuttle service to Brighton rubbing our noses in it.

1) Some of the late East Coastway Eastbound trains are scheduled to be 8 carriages, as they need to balance the stock to Eastbourne, I think there is a circuit or two that runs as an 8 until end of service departing Brighton about 5, if you overload lovers walk there won't be enough for the service from Eastbourne in the morning. It would be interesting to see if this 8 car circuit could be shifted to an hour later so it comes through Brighton at a perfect time, but of course that is a balancing act with extra time etc.

2) I mean there's a lot of factors, but yes ultimately its the governments fault, they tender the contracts and they are looking to make savings, getting rid of the 455s and 313s with no replacements was a ridiculous idea, but this all comes down to the cowboy business of Rolling Stock owners. The companies have to get the government to tender a contract for new stock and send that off before any new stuff can turn up.

I agree there should be longer trains, but as I said, they are running at the base level without strengthening. There aren't any extra coaches to extend them beyond 3 or 4 on a midweek, that may not be the answer you want but that is the truth. There aren't enough carriages. As you'd have to start cancelling other scheduled services, which then causes many other problems. I personally alleviate the problem by staying behind for a drink but I understand not everyone can do that. There is in my opinion an attitude from the government that no one in this country uses trains, so they aren't giving it any real investment. I'm not sure what happened on the West Coastway because I didn't use that route. I also don't think this is an exclusively Brighton problem at the moment, trams to city on Saturday were a bit of a joke and other grounds this season I've found transport provision is getting worse, I think its just a symptom of this country at the moment, where everything (buses included) is being run on a thread bare budget and no one who can make a real difference at high level of government seems bothered about solving any issues.

Where do the taxis pick up from?
I typically walk to the university (after being aghast at the train queues) then get an Uber (while generally complaining about the price).

I was with my son and nephew (10&13) so wanted to get them home. If I was by myself I’d have drunk until the queues were gone.

I'm interested to know what users of the trains (I have used them for matches but not often) believe an acceptable wait is post match?

There are occasions when things go wrong that couldn't be foreseen and then there is bad planning etc.

There does appear a lack of joined up thinking when it comes to transport. The closing of sections of the A27 going east has been happening for a number of seasons. It's like the planners aren't aware the biggest event in the South is happening nearby that evening and at least wait for a period before shutting the road but, no.

Yep ... scheduled to start leaving at 10.15pm last night and that's what happened.

Clapped the lads after final whistle for 5 minutes or so ... used the 'facilities' and then slow walk back to bus.

Sometimes I'd like to get to the ground earlier than our ST bus - and on occasion I've made my way in other ways. But the real plus is post match getting away.

I buy a season ticket for league games - which is a decent saving on buying a seat for individual matches. And bought a three match travel pack for the Europa group games. Our driver is a top bloke and after the official last stop on way home a few of is stay on and he stops again where he turns back around ... literally 100 yards from my house! And for the trip to the Amex, if he sees me walking to the pick up point he stops for me (y) Can't ask for more than that!

Same. After the AEK game there was no way I was trying for the trains/buses again. Thought even if it was raining then I'd be getting as wet cycling as I would queuing. I know not everyone can cycle home but if you live in town then it's surely the best way to get to/from the game if you are able
Yeah, I'm staggered that more people don't cycle. I left Hove Rec just after 7.15 and was in the ground by 7.55. Coming home, I clapped the players off and was back home (not Hove) at 10.20. I live quite close to the ground but I'd cycle wherever was. I used to cycle to Withdean as well as it's by far the easiest way to get away from the game.

Yes, although the prospect of having a heart attack after I'd actually boarded the bus might put me off. Came out the station to see the bus pulling away, but knew there was another stop around the corner and managed to overtake it when it stopped at a red light. I'm 60 ffs, but the thought of waiting an hour in the cold for the next one or forking out for an extortionate cab fare was too much to bear!
