I hope that he's got the energy to drag himself over the mountains. A 35th stage win on the Champs Elysees would be my favourite ever sporting moment - even more than winning the Euros.

Let's hope that we are spoilt, and both happen.

Cav and Quickstep are making it look routine. They are in another league to the rest of the race.

Cav winning green would be immense. With the Euros and the Olympics, let's hope it doesn't get overlooked - someone would have to go a long way to beat Cav to my Sports Personality of the Year nomination.

Absolutely brilliant.

He just makes it look routine.

He won it in 2011 and a second would be deserved.

Generations will look back on a Brit who dominated a facet of fiercely competitive pro riding, we’re lapping it up in real time.

I think one year he didnt win it with six stage wins and Hinault said that should never happen and they reviewed the points system. So he is due one, hopefully he can hang in there and get over the mountains. It is going to be very painful, but what a comeback!

Didn’t they also for a while deliberately reduce the number of archetypal ‘Cavendish’ type bunch sprint stages?

I knew the result but watching it later, I couldn't see how he could win it. Wish I'd have been able to watch it live. Amazing stuff.

Yes when French riders were capable of gathering points to get Green. Which ultimately Gilbert and Sagan when he emerged took over doing. Ironically they reduced the number of Sagan favoured stages this year. Probably didnt even think of Cav at all :).

Cue: a load of 2022 TdF (non-mountainous) stages to favour long breakaways by Alaphilippe and breakaway specialists.

Cav is said to hit around 1600w output on a final sprint……….have a go next time you’re on a gym bike or wattbike or similar and see how close you can get (bearing un mind you won’t have been on the road for 4 or 5 hours and 200k+before doing it)

Here's a thing that I've only just really taken in this morning, from the excitement of yesterday, after watching back yesterday's finale.

Has there ever been a better lead out man than Morkov!?

Renshaw will obviously get a shout for Cav, but seeing Morkov lunge on the line for second place yesterday is actually pretty incredible :lolol:

Possibly it's mainly about World Tour points and to a lesser extent, his own palmares, but surely it's just THE ultimate in Cav duty by nicking green jersey points away from Philipsen?

Renshaw and Morkov are the greatest. Watching some old Cav wins across Europe including the TdF, Renshaw similarly sometimes crossed the line for a podium place.

Not flash in the pans, consistently over years.
