If they continue with this, then they will be in the wilderness for years. They need to put daylight between themselves and Reform and the reason that needs to happen is simply that the people in charge of Reform are past looking at cosey deals or merging with the Tories. Ten years ago, the headbanger route might have worked with Reform buy-in, but it won't anymore.

How the Tories manage to put clear blue sky between both themselves and Labour with a moderate yet distinctive one-nation conservatism whilst at the same time distancing themselves from the far right elements of the Conservative Party (typified by Braverman, Rees Mogg and Truss) without duplicating Reform’s platform will be a real challenge. It is a challenge that needs to be met asap imo - a healthy democracy is measured by the strength of its opposition and the last thing we need in this Country is Farage’s Reform being the only alternative to a Labour Government.

If I were a Conservative Party member, I’d be looking very closely at someone like James Cleverly who stands a better chance to unite the Party than eg Braverman or Badenoch who will only divide the Party even further.

The Conservative fun factory is back up and running, but this time with absolutely no risk to the country. The Tory leadership contest is due to end in November but judging from previous form could run and run with the same dysfunctional cast gearing up for a completely new set of psychodramas, backstabbing and general narcissistic lunacy.

We've got Cleverly, never has anybody been more ironically named. His personal high was describing the Rwanda plan as 'Batshit crazy' shortly before being given responsibility for implementing it

Tom Tugendhat, the sensible one, so absolutely no chance of being elected by the swivel eyed members

Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister who resigned because he wasn't up to it

And, waiting in the wings, Braverman, Patel etc etc.

I do worry about having the conservative membership elect the leader (see Truss). After Johnson kicked out and sidelined all sensible Conservatives, I really can't see any quick ways back

I don't think you need to worry. It will be a stitch up. MPs will narrow it down to two, Badenoch and one other and then the one other will be forced to withdraw before the members even vote. There is no democracy left in the Tory party.

I don't see how the Tories can move further to the left. They are already in favour of higher taxes than any Labour government has ever dared (though that record won't last long) and higher immigration than any Labour government has ever dared (that record may stand for a while, though probably not.) The spend more on the NHS and on welfare than any previous government, they continue to support pointless EU rules such as the one that makes it illegal for a vet to prescribe medicines that are used on humans if the same product is licensed for animals, they continue to support red tape and quangos. I don't see that adapting even more Labour policies will help.
