IMO she has no choice but to carefully remove the knife Sunak stuck in his own back, then stick it back in a dozen times - just to make sure.
If she turns up on the tellybox tonight and tries to defend Sunak in any way, shape, or form, not only will she lose any opportunity to become leader of the Tory party there is a very good chance she will lose her seat and her political career.
I wasn't going to bother tonight after watching Sunak being allowed to shout his lies over Starmer earlier in the week but now I wouldn't miss it.
If Sunak had anything about him at all, he would tell Mourdant "This is on me. I will go on the tellybox tonight and defend my words and actions this week. You have a quiet night in".

It's certainly going to be an interesting first few minutes. Agree she can't defend Sunak and I'm sure she wouldn't want to, although looking at her majority can't see her losing even if she does, or at least tries not to dwell on it.
Sunak is now definitely toast, so she probably just needs to be patient and not launch any torpedoes.
The trouble for Penny Mourdant is that at this rate she won't be an MP either. That's the reality facing some of the applicants for leadership - assuming Sunak loses.

I pity Penny Mordaunt on tonight's debate. It would have been a tough ask to trot out the party line and double down on the £2,000 tax claim - as Mark Harper did on QT last night - but to have to do so off the back of Rishi's Dunkirk-style Normandy Beach Retreat is surely Mission Impossible?
Her brain must be addled. I don't see how she keeps Rishi in the game AND keeps her own political career alive. At what point do you throw in the towel on the General Election and start the fight to save the traditional The Conservative Party? It looks like the next leader will either be her or a right-wing crackpot like Badenoch, Braverman, Patel or even Farage.
And she doesn't even know whether she'll win her own seat, she could be out in less than one month, a shining light of the party just another leadership "what might have been" consigned to the political scrapheap like Michael Heseltine, Michael Portillo and Rory Stewart before her.

I think it's quite easy for her really, she doesn't have to defend him as he has admitted the mistake. So she just has to say, it was wrong and he's admitted that and apologised, now let's move on and not politicise the sacrifice of D-Day soldiers.
Totally expect her to double down on the £2000 lie though, as just about every Tory has since Sunak claimed it.
I am intrigued to know how the 2k plays out. The figure is out there. Lots think he meant a year. He didn’t. He meant over the course of Parliament which means it is actually 400 quid a year.
Everyone knows he over egged it so let’s say it would be 200 a year.
That is about 4 quid a week.
Which is not even enough to buy a pint. Would most people sacrifice one pint a week to have better services? I suspect they would.

Why would the new Labour MP for Richmond (Yorks) be leaving a few weeks after being voted in?

The Labour candidate, Fred Thomas, is an ex Royal Marine, so the ideal candidate to win the seat.
I was wondering that. His heart is clearly not in the campaign and he must be thinking "Sod it, California's nice this time of year". I've no idea what would happen if he did. New Tory leaders are elected by the members after being nominated by MPs ... but if there are no MPs, what happens?
