I'm not sure I'd agree with this. The leader debates do have an impact - look at the boost it gave Nick Clegg in 2010, there was an immediate leap in the LD showing and they scored the most seats for some time. Clegg wasn't a particularly engaging speaker, but he handled himself well in the debates. And we haven't seen a leader fall apart yet but, if anyone will, I think Sunak will.

I do agree with your line "if they happen", I can see the Tories pulling out of these because they know what a disaster they'll be for Sunak. And I'm not sure swapping leaders will help - unless they pick Mordaunt - the others all look pretty hopeless. Mordaunt isn't: she's a skilled debater but she's not a members' favourite, so has no chance.

I'm not sure how much of the boost Clegg had from the first debate remained by the time the actual vote came around. In any case, the Lib Dems won 5 fewer seats in 2010 than 2005, albeit with 23% of the vote rather than 22%.

The complete oddness of where they are. Their members don't want the most competent leader and are more interested continuing on an ideological basis that will see them out of power for decade.

I've never believe I'd think this, but the Conservatives have morphed into the 1980 Labour party.

She's in an interesting position. There was a poll out this week that stated she was the only senior Tory with a positive net approval rating (it was just 2%, but that was enough). Some of her competitors for leader had an appalling rating, I think Braveman was -60% (or something). There have been reports from political reporters that Mordaunt is the only leader that the Labour party fears, yet the indications are that she has little chance of being elected leader and if they replace Sunak, they'll replace him with someone even less popular.

That's worse than Labour choosing Corbyn. At least, he brought a new constituency into play, as Corbyn attracted students, who normally shun elections. I don't see what streams of uncommitted voters Braveman or Badenoch will bring to the party.
