As much as this is true and it was a Johnson mayoral policy, I presume the mayor has the power not to implement it throughout greater London?

If I was an apologist for this useless Tory government, I'd have campaigned on an unpopular local Labour policy too, even if it was our idea several years ago.

I mean I hated Nadine Dorries like every sane person but quite admire her principled resignation after those nasty establishment types prevented her from appearing on the honours list and taking a seat in the Lords. Car ownership is very low in London, but when you go out to this borough it goes up significantly and those cars are generally owned by those who can very much afford ro replace them but don't like being told to.

In the big scheme of things the result there is an outlier and I don't think it will have much of an effect on the Mayoral elections.

Again the Tories have selected an absolutely terrible candidate.

I think this was a good result for Labour in that it might reduce the likelihood of complacency between now and the next GE.

You are right of course in what you say about London car ownership, but arguably they should simply have stopped it's rollout to the suburbs. Just make it a central London policy.

As for the Tories, they have indeed selected a thick, gormless Mrs Grotbags as candidate. That should see Khan back into office.

The Mayor is required to extend it as the Government made it a condition for receiving funding for Transport For London !

Johnson refused to answer questions in parliament about it at the time.

Grant whatever he is calling himself sent the letter and was soon on the radio telling the public what a bad policy it was.

They just lie, lie and lie.

I think they also encouraged the Mayor to place a supplement on the council tax to pay for TFL. During the local elections round here all the Tories had to campaign with was the threat of a council tax rise under Labour.

One thing is very noticeable in these results and that’s tactical voting.

If this can be maintained the Tories will get absolutely smashed in the next GE, it’s the only to deal with our broken democratic system

True, but talk like that will frighten too many people. I think Starmer’s approach - whilst frustrating - is the right one. Just get rid of the Tories, then you can start implementing progressive policies.

That is, that they have dragged politics, including the labour party enough to the right to enable the status quo in this country whereby we would still have an unfair / undemocratic voting system, a plutocratic state and a failed Brexit well and truly safe and plough on down that same ridiculous road. Their greatest fear was in 2017 where Corbyn was inches away from winning and he would have brought in radical change, radical policies and shifted power back into the hands of people. Instead we will get a Tory lite government with a red rosette which is even to the right of Cameron. Nothing will change

5 years of Blairism in which we will all be slowly convinced that the Conservative Party are the only people capable of getting Great Britain out of this Labour Party mess.


With the added bonus of some within The Labour Party handing the Tories a jerry can of petrol and box of matches.
