Addressing a crowd in Grantham on Saturday, the Lincolnshire home town of Margaret Thatcher, Sunak declared “have no doubt, I am the underdog” and suggested that Conservative party powers want the race to be “a coronation” for Truss.

“The forces that be want this to be a coronation for the other candidate. But I think members want a choice and they are prepared to listen,” he said during a speech, surrounded by supporters carrying signs with his campaign slogan “Ready for Rishi”.

Where did you get 6 from if you don't mind me asking? That proposal was in 2020. They were increased by 50% last year, hence why I asked the question. Someone else on Twitter says that there are already 10.

Edit: Port of Dover requested 14 French staff yesterday and only 6 turned up. There must be more than 6 booths if they need 14 staff I would have thought.

Edit Again: Telegraph says that there are 12 French passport booths at Dover.

However many booths, lanes or personnel there are, it is our government which made the choices about borders and not to be part of a more liberal regime. I think the expression is “hoist with your own petard”.

Having experienced a couple of times in Europe the traffic chaos on black Saturdays - the days in August when everyone goes on holiday or comes back, this particular weekend was always going to be a problem….. and how. If you have 4 people in a car, that’s 4 passports to check and stamp, and that is all necessary because of the need to check that we don’t stay in Europe more than the 90 days we can without visas.

It was our government which made the choices which made all this necessary, all for the sake of seeming bullish and well ‘ard about border control……. Which is what the people (allegedly) want. It’s a problem largely of our own making.

Yes, although the full version reveals that the components of that video have been moved around.

In the full version Truss is actually quite humourous and engaging. Which I wasn't expecting.

Seems to be a trick that even the media we hold in a crumb of respect are quite happy to do.

Tory grandees who served in Margaret Thatcher’s final cabinet have warned that the former prime minister would never have approved of Liz Truss’s plan to slash £30bn off taxes funded by borrowing, as Rishi Sunak denounced his opponent’s plans as “immoral”.

With a bitter row over tax emerging as the defining issue in the race to succeed Boris Johnson, three members of Thatcher’s cabinet told the Observer that she would have taken a dim view of slashing taxes at a time of high inflation. This follows repeated claims that Truss has attempted to model herself on Thatcher in her attempt to win the leadership, which she has denied.

chap from the port this morning said there are 14 booths and lanes, they expected 12 border staff today, after 6 came yesturday. we can acknowledge there would be delays any way due to brexit imposed checks, its still odd that the French didnt send enough staff on an obviously busy day.

there was supposed to be a electonic e-gate based system in place, so you'd just scan passports instead of more time consuming stamps, thats been delayed.

I am sure she is quite an engaging character to have a chat with. Most people have something to say for themselves. It's just a shame that when you put her at the lectern or in any kind of official situation with adults, she has all the capacity of a one legged woman at an arse kicking competition.

1997 will look like a walk in the park compared to what is going to happen to the tories in 2024

Truss will win and in 2 years time after 300 years of being the 1st or 2nd party the tories will be obliterated and will split into a right wing and the more liberals will form a new party

And I for one can’t wait

They did send enough staff. They travel over by Eurotunnel, the M20 eastbound was closed for over 2 hours when they arrived so they couldn’t do the short journey from Folkestone to Dover. They were delayed.
Look up notifications from Highways yesterday morning.

The biometric system starts in September.

Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have vowed to toughen controls on migration into the UK as part of their bids to become next Tory leader and prime minister.

Mr Sunak said he would tighten the definition of who qualifies for asylum and introduce a cap on refugee numbers.

Ms Truss said she would extend the UK's Rwanda asylum plan and increase the number of Border Force staff.

Given up on explaining their different approach to tax then?

Just trying to appeal to the party members on this.

How depressingly predictable.

Yes, this is something I read about over the past couple of days.

The refugee issue is the Tories Four Yorkshireman sketch parody around election time. The policy getting more draconian as someone else reveals how much tougher they are going to get. The membership reacting like the peasants in the burn the witch sketch of Holy Grail.

Buy stocks in dog whistles. They are going to get through thousands of them in this campaign.

I still haven't completely ruled out a Johnson comeback ???

No new policies from either candidate, just more of the same whilst the economy continues to plummet and the cost of living rockets still further. Give the new incumbent a few months and I think the Conservative Party members may be wanting to return to the 'Good old days' of Johnson.

After all, it wasn't them that got rid of him was it :shootself

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss have pledged to dramatically expand the Rwanda scheme for removing asylum seekers, as they bid with growing ferocity for Conservative members’ votes in the party leadership race.

Both are appealing to the right of the party with pledges on immigration branded “cruel” by charities.

In a bid to stress his Brexiter credentials, Sunak said he would do “whatever it takes” to get the stalled Rwanda plan “off the ground and operating at scale”, along with a vow to pursue more “migration partnerships” with other countries.
