Not exactly the same situation but someone also mentioned Theresa May. I would think it irresponsible for any PM to simply leave office with immediate effect. In the US this period is formalized into a set time period. There has to be a handover and there will also be a Tory leadership election.
Don’t get me wrong though. There should be a General Election not a carve up by Tory MPs.

But we had one of those 2.5 years ago, when you thought voting for a 'useful idiot' would be a good idea. Remember how that turned out ?

summer recess isnt far is it? parliamentary business will halt anyway. they only need to have a cabinet for executive powers and see it out for as long as a leadership contest takes.

They could do, especially as the new PM will want to give something out to the nation. Restoring the UC £20 per week, VAT cut on petrol and utilities, scrapping of the NI increase.

Constitutional crisis

After 12 years, austerity, Brexit, diddly squat on the climate crisis, food banks, the cost-of-living-crisis, the Tories are now visiting a constitutional crisis on us. There's rampant inflation, low, no or negative growth, war in Europe, a climate crisis, accelerating inequalities, and this is where we currently are.

What are the current constitutional problems?
1, we don't have a written constitution
2, we have a liar for a PM, and now even his Cabinet will no longer put up with this
3, he's still our PM ...
4, ... but there's no Cabinet 'to get on with the job of governing'
5, there are no obvious candidates to take over his job ...
6, ... which means that there will be a protracted leadership contest
7, if the Cabinet of a week or so ago is revived, many of the leading figures will be duking it out in search for the job they believed that they're destined for, and the vehicle of the Conservative Party can so reassuringly deliver
8, there is the alternative of ditching the current incumbent, and replacing him with a temp, but that still leaves the question of who the Cabinet will be

Still, strong and stable, levelling up, the sunny uplands of Brexit and all that

James Cleverly has been appointed the new education secretary, replacing Michelle Donelan, who herself was only appointed on Tuesday to replace Nadhim Zahawi when be became chancellor. Cleverly was a minister of state at the Foreign Office.

On the other hand, the Tories might be uncomfortable to give Boris' government a confidence vote, in case he took that to mean they wanted him to stay on permanently. Would certainly be interesting.

For someone who always comes across as very measured and assured, unusually he looked anything but.

A lot of adrenaline pumping, I imagine. The unravelling of the government over the last 48 hours or so, bringing to a head something he has been pursuing for many months.
