The worst ever British prime minister finally goes… in disgrace. What a long nightmare that was. Undignified through it all. Huge damage done. A shameful legacy. But today, we can at least be glad he’s gone.

And start shitting ourselves at some of the candidates that in all likelihood would be even worse...

The BBC are saying the same but I am confused, how can this happen?

Surely if he steps down from the party and that party put him in as PM, one thing would lead to the other?

Or is there something in the process that makes him as an individual PM rather than the leader of the winning party.

yes. Queen appoints the PM, by convention they are the leader of the largest party in parliament, whoever can carry the confidence of the house. obvs that last bit is invalid now but until there is a confidence vote he stays, and even then cant resign but recommend an alternative for Queen to appoint. outside case he does that (Rabb is the default if he is incapacitated), but reckon they'll wait to elect a leader, which i dont expect to take until the autumn.

I swore I heard him say earlier that (paraphrasing) "we don't need to speak to the opposition"

Which doesn't bode well if he runs and wins.
You did.

He's now said that he is considering standing, the rest was basically a broadcast on his own behalf.

The whitewashing of his legacy is already beginning on Sky News with the "he's not a bad man" spiel.

**** off. He's a lying, corrupt, venal, narcissist who has been more than happy to flirt with racism, sexism and homophobia and who treated the Queen, Parliament, his own cabinet colleagues and the British people at large with utter contempt. What follows may be worse in a different way but there are very, very few in the history of Parliament who are worse people than Boris Johnson. He's a boil on the arse of humanity.

I know someone who works for Ben Wallace in the HOC.

The Tories want Johnson out asap so they can try to win back the Oarty before the Party Conference.

Raab as interim PM?

They will have to throw Johnson out. But there is now no mechanism, his having resigned.

Let's consider Wilson. On 16 March 1976, Wilson announced his resignation as prime minister (taking effect on 5 April). Jim Callaghan took over as PM the day Wilson left.

So, Neville's Breakfast, there is no 'protocol' that Johnson hang on till the autumn. What happens is what a party decides except in the present case, where Johnson has put the government in Limbo.

After he and his supporters insisted that a leadership change or general election would be The Wrong Thing right now, Johnson has initiated the most drawn out and unwanted process.

That wonderful term can be traced back to 1936 when Irish author Elizabeth Bowen published a review in the London periodical “The Spectator”.

Always good to keep a gem alive.

I didnt know this, thank you. But yes, it's a gem of a line and I will do my part to keep it alive.

this is my worry too, when each of the previous ones have left they been replaced with worse. I can't imagine how the next one can be worse but they seem to have a carousel of @rseholes

Well, lets hope they follow the example of Major following Thatcher and take a step back to the center ground rather than away from it.

They voted for Boris, what they think a clever person looks like is surely irrelevant. [emoji23]

None of them will be as bad as Big Dog, potentially 'worse' policies (depending on your opinion), but none will be worse overall than Big Dog, the worst PM ever.

This. And I hope the relatives of the tens thousands who died uneccessarily due to his procrastination and incompetence dealing with Covid, and who then could not properly mourn their losses while he partied away, will get a small piece of comfort today.

He's going to hang around like a bad smell till he's replaced.

He is apparently thinking of standing again as a leadership candidate.

And which of the rats will crawl back to ensure government can function till the handover?

We have no functioning government right now, so who will agree to be (re)appointed as ministers etc till the handover?

This is not yet the end. Johnson has set chaos in aspic for two months, the selfish, selfish, narcissistic man.

BBC Radio Nicky Campbell plumbs a new low in its search for callers who seem to have suffered a brain trauma as "Sue from somewhere" calls up tearfully to say it reminds her of 'The Lion King.'

ffs, can't the BBC's rolling news station abandon this ridiculous phone in for one day and actually broadcast the views of proper political analysts?

It’s also not quite as clear cut as you are saying. Tony Blair for instance had a two year departure punctuated by a series of defeats in Commons votes.

Not exactly the same situation but someone also mentioned Theresa May. I would think it irresponsible for any PM to simply leave office with immediate effect. In the US this period is formalized into a set time period. There has to be a handover and there will also be a Tory leadership election.
Don’t get me wrong though. There should be a General Election not a carve up by Tory MPs.
