Chris Patten, speaking on Radio 4:

As Boris Johnson looks to rebuild his Downing Street operation, we’ve heard some scathing words from former Conservative chairman Chris Patten.

He tells Radio 4’s World at One: “I’ve always thought the show was likely to end in disaster.”

Patten says Johnson’s leadership has been particularly scarred in the “last act” by the prime minister’s “scurrilous attack” on Sir Keir Starmer and the false claim that the Labour leader failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile.

The former MP goes on to criticise the prime minister's character, referring to him as a “moral vacuum” and a “symptom of what’s gone wrong” with the Conservative party.

He says people need to stand up to the right wing of the party which he describes as a “Johnsonian cult.”

I seem to remember someone had drawn a small cock and balls very neatly in the conservative box, and because he didn't go over the lines, they counted it as one for the Tories!

Really? I'd have thought that that is a bit too ambiguous as it could show support for the tory candidate or just indicate that the voter thinks he's a cock. My understanding is that spoilt papers can count if a voter has clearly expressed a preference, eg if you were to put a clear cross in your preferred candidates box, it would still count even if you'd written 'is a ****' after the name of the Tory candidate.

Some people tick the box, some a diagonal line etc which is why the candidates have to examine each one and agree on whether to allocate a vote to a specific candidate.

It is not difficult to con Baker Lite.
He is the village idiot, a simple and quite pathetic little man.
He only wants a response so, he just turns out drivel to get that response. It's almost johnsonian in its own way, throw something completely daft in to a post and see how many start talking about it.... Put him on ignore and don't interact and he withers away.

Gods country fortnightly
I've been sharing this clip with friends overseas who can't really understand why Johnson is still PM

It demonstrates how ridiculous politics has become in these isles when we have such actors masquerading themselves are serious journalists.. Ladies and gentleman, Tim Stanley from the once serious Daily Telegraph..

Haven't heard one person think this was acceptable except Johnsons own band of morons but posts like this have to remind us all that this sort ignorance exists. He only has to con a few like this.

... genuinely regret that I have to agree with your opinion.

There is no excuse, none, for such a shameful, ill informed comment.

Such poisonous remarks are mercifully rare but just imagine if that was not the case!
