Interesting points. I think I agree. Have you ever read Fromm? I find some of his thoughts valid, i.e. a psychosocial element, kind of a reaction against changing hegemonies?

No, only read snippets from Fromm.
I wish I had more time to read critical theory, but don't. From the response I've given you might not be surprised that Gramsci is key, whose best successor is Ernest Laclau, who has devised the most convincing theory of populism. You can get a briefer, more comprehensible account of it if you read the article 'Trust the People!' by Margaret Canovan.

"Lord Archer was today jailed for four years after being found guilty of lying and cheating in his 1987 libel case against the Daily Star"

The Guardian Thu 19 Jul 2001

This is the sort of future that awaits Johnson. Pretty soon, he'll no longer enjoy the governmental legal protection he does now. And there are going to be some serious skeletons coming out of his cupboard. He has made some powerful enemies these last few years. His reluctance to depart could well be buying time, trying to head off "loose ends".

His fall will come. He is simply not clever or influential enough to sustain the life he leads.

The thing is, he didn't use the word "resign", but he DID say he has agreed that a process for selecting a new leader should begin, and that he will step aside once that new leader has been selected. So he HAS resigned in any normal interpretation of the definition of the word. In a normal workplace you wouldn't couch your resignation in such terms ("I've agreed to step aside, boss, but I'll stay until you have chosen my successor" - instead you would say "I resign, but I'll see out my notice if you want me to").

He is obviously a complete dickhead and a lunatic, so he MAY try some Trumpian ruse to stay on, but it wouldn't work. The process is underway, and he will be gone. If he tries to stay, he will simply be ejected via a vote of no confidence.

*There's a small part of me that's still worried though!

It's quite obvious, he's resigned as leader of the Conservative Party, but not as PM but, once the Conservative Party elects a new leader, that person becomes the PM. There's very little that Johnson can do about that. He might try something, but it won't succeed.

I have sympathy for the lady but a half decent solicitor would tear her to shreds. This is how they will paint it. "She gets into an alleged sexual relationship with him on the alleged promise of a job and when she fails the interview she tries to exact revenge by secretly recording him".

It wouldn't get to court.

Still reckon the Lebedev thing is the really big story waiting to blow up...

Not sure it needs to go that far, it's a pattern of behaviour that been going on since he was London Mayor.

He was never fit for public office.

It's certainly our best shot at getting him prosecuted, that we know of. There will be people after his blood now. I predict a terrible few years ahead for him . What a shame. However, that lady's tape won't be a part of it. No, it doesn't reflect well on Johnson but it's not a crime to have an affair, it's not a crime to recommend someone for a job, and it's not a crime to shout at someone.

Nothing on that tape I heard would be likely to land him in court.

There are a number of parallels.

The difference is that Thatcher whilst knowing Archer was popular with the grass roots kept Archer on a very short lead because she knew he was a wrong'un.

The biggest mistake Cameron made was persuading Johnson to become London Mayor to keep him out the way. The rest is history.

This is going to be hilarious as Johnson lobs them all under a succession of buses. **** knows what skeletons Wallace has rattling around that made him realise it wasn't even worth even standing in the first place!

This may well boil down to two shirtless Tory's in The Strangers Bar, arm wrestling for the role :lolol:

Coincidently Archer and Zahawi are mates and had business interests together prior to Archer's downfall.

Watch the press next week or have a look at what the journalist Michael Crick has to say about him. Cricks book on Archer is probably my favourite book.

I shall seek that out, Thanks
