[Politics] Tory meltdown finally arrived [was: incoming]...

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
Project 'Save Big Dog' with its latest policy for distraction:

Boris Johnson campaigned for Brexit on the grounds that it would allow the UK to “take back control” of its immigration arrangements. But the government’s failure to stop people crossing the Channel in small boats to claim asylum (almost 30,000 last year) has made a mockery of that, and today Johnson is going to announce a new approach that will make government policy in this area more hardline than it has been for decades.

The government is going to sign a deal with Rwanda for it to take some of the people crossing the Channel in the hope of settling in Britain. Instead they will be flown 4,500 miles away to Africa. Full details of the plan have not yet been revealed, but it seems the policy will apply to single men. Some reports have said they will be taken to Rwanda to have their asylum applications processed, but*Mark Easton,*the BBC’s home affairs editor, told Radio 4’s Today programme within the last hour that it would be a “one-way ticket” for people who would be settled in*Rwanda.

It will cost billions, and then they need vaccinations like typhoid, TB, polio, yellow fever etc.

Huge cost

Wonder which Tory donor will get the contract to build the centre?

As Frederick Douglas said when this kind of white supremacist nutjobbery was tried in the early part of the 19th century:

"Shame upon the guilty wretches that dare propose, and all that countenance such a proposition."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Colonization_Society

How could we face the rest of the world coming from the country that, when approached by desperate people for help, pays money to make them go away? Utterly cynical and devoid of human empathy. Once again this corrupt band of self servers finds a new low.

It's also breaking international law according to the United Nations convention on refugees 1951. I suspect it will be legally challenged in the courts and cost millions in legal fees.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the government had already priced in this proposal’s eventual defeat in the court. Then they go to the polls on a “politically motivated judiciary, liberal elite, enemies of the people” ticket. Sadly, a culture war makes an effective substitute for a credible policy platform.

Everything about this bunch is highly cynical...

"Shit - Met Police about to issue fine - better get Boris to Kyiv as fast as poss"
"Shit - Rishi looking like he's a shoe-in to replace Boris - better leak some crap stuff about his wife's tax affairs"
"Shit - Partygate won't go away - better announce some mad-cap plan to send asylum-seekers to Africa"

Not sure what it'll be tomorrow or the next day, but it'll definitely be some massive diversionary tactic.

The view that Boris and the cabinet is focussing on the war in Ukraine is utterly, utterly pathetic....they are running around trying to do anything to stay in power (no matter the cost to the UK).

It's a nice distraction from realising we have a crooked PM and throws red meat out to the looney Mail readers and Brexiteers....they will love this even if it turns out to be illegal....cue an attempt to "Take back Control " by leaving the United Nations !

They just announce crap stuff without even bothering to check whether it's legal or workable....look at what happened after P&O sacked their ferry staff. First Boris said they were going to take legal action against P&O (which they then backed away from). Then they told ports that they had to check whether any ships using their ports complied with minimum wage legislation, then realised that was utterly unworkable. This government is truly a bunch of chancers and charlatans who just spout the first thing that comes into their heads.

You this l this is mad just wait until the May local elections expect some bonkers idea along the lines of sending the never to intercept a few French trawler’s off the cost of the Channel Islands 24 hours before the last election to ensure frothing little englanders would vote Tory, it’s a little way off yet but my guess is 24 hours before 5th May the Government will provide Ukraine with some offensive weapons

They spend most of their life in campaign mode and trying to control the new cycle rather than getting on with governing

When you strip it away there is very little policy which really addresses the challenges we face in the 21st century.

The thing is, you and I may know that, but it isn't having sufficient traction with the floating voter, let alone those who would normally vote conservative. Yes, we have seen nice sensible conservatives on NSC (there are many) saying they want to see Johnson voted out, but not in sufficient numbers. The data as of April 8 are below. Let's see how partygate fines followed by concentration camps affect the trend. My guess is little change. Labout projected to get an unworkable majority, but if you factor in 'shy tories' I would expect to see a Johnson win, albeit without a working majority (or much chance of forming a coalition - with the DUP and SNP!). Messy.

The way he dealt with the press conference today was masterful*, referring all questions about partygate to a announcement he would be making some time in the future, warmly thanking the journalists for their important questions.

*For a man convinced he can do anything he wants, because what's good for Johnson is good for the nation by definition - othewise known as narcissistic personality disorder.

framing the Rwanda asylum seeker plan as a distraction is kinda downplaying it.
