Last week the Resolution Foundation calculated such a move would mean taking a fifth out of budgets for certain departments across the parliament, sparking concern among economists, trade unions and even some Conservatives.

I'm not sure a single line in quite a long article constitutes 'their source' (they also quote the Institute for Government) especially when they say at the very beginning of the article

But it's not exactly unusual for you to leap in and try to defend the Government before backtracking is it

Those may or may not be changed in the next budget; but those elements were crucial in how Hunt justified handouts in his last fiscal statement, so no doubt those elements will remain in place so he can justify big pre-Election handouts in an attempt to win votes.

For the Tories, they'll be looking at it as a win-win: if it works, they win a GE everyone expects them to lose (although the Tories then lose, as the trap they're laying for Labour will then spring on them). If it doesn't work, then they know they've saddled Labour with a budgetary position that will force Labour to reverse the tax cuts and allow the Tories to then go on a "see! we told you!" crusade attacking Labour for increasing taxes.

a trap that could be avoided, call out the cuts, explain how spending needs increasing and how it'll be funded.

what we currently have is spending increases, tax increases, but apprently some cut to services, with no questions where or how that doesn't add up. and that's before any forecast pre-election tax cut bribe.

She is a member of the Conservative party so I would be surprised if her views matched yours on lots of things, but I believe she speaks a lot of sense (as do some honest politicians from all sides of the spectrum).

Call me cynical but there's no universe in which they don't try and claim some sort of AI influence over a GE they just lost.

To be honest, we have the previous x amount of years being told the election here, USA and Brexit was fiddled by Russians.

As I suspect you're well aware, she's been banging this particular drum for about a decade now. Because Islamophobia in the Conservative Party, and in wider UK society is alive and well. And yet we hear so little about it. It's hiding in plain sight, while all the noise is generated elsewhere.

Grassroots Conservative supporters have called Rishi Sunak a “snake” over Lee Anderson’s suspension as MPs on the Tory right said he should be given a route back in.

In leaked WhatsApp messages obtained by the Guardian, members of the Conservative Democratic Organisation (CDO), which was founded by disgruntled Tories after Boris Johnson and then Liz Truss were ousted, attacked the prime minister for kicking Anderson out of the parliamentary party.


Several of the activists endorsed Anderson’s comments and some went further in decrying “the threat of Islam”.
