Er - those chicken breasts (and anything around that price) will not have "water pumped in". Not that they actually "pump" water in at all.

Chicken has become so cheap with intensive rearing it's actually quite difficult to buy fresh chicken with added water.

The only place you will find it is in the big bags of frozen fillets, but in itself is no guarantee of added water.

Wickies geese are £25 - £35 at Christmas time. The exact same thing in Canhams on Church Road is circa £70.

They simply buy in bulk and sell in deals. They're terrific chaps as well, Brighton fans and look after the local old people.

It's a shame to see so many people getting a local issue wrong because of their politics. Looks like Westdene was right about this thread as well.

High welfare, where is evidence? These chickens would have never seen the light of day. The shops are popular because they're cheap

The answer is "it depends what else you buy". The best deals are on "hampers" at the weekends and they can work out very well per piece, but you'll come back with enough to stuff your freezer and keep you going for a month.

To which I would add that we buy most meat in independent butchers too. Either that or people like Garlic Wood. My objection was to Westdene's suggestion that the only reason for people buying meat in eg Lidl was because they were stupid. If your independent butcher can sell a chicken for a bit over three quid then my point doesn't stand. Otherwise, it does.

I'm sure they run a good business and buying cheap chicken is what 90% of the market is. People buy on price, and this butcher selling at £4-5 is about as cheap as you can buy in the retail space

There's nothing wrong with this, its fast growing and efficient and it won't hurt you, but please don't pretend its high welfare.

I've worked in these they smell horrid and most chickens are gone after 18 months to slaughter due to reduced egg production. You can always pick them up for your own coops.

I've worked in these they smell horrid and most chickens are gone after 18 months to slaughter due to reduced egg production. You can always pick them up for your own coops.
